Blog Post #1, 1st Year Seminar- Visual Studies

The main points in the first article “What Can Entrepreneurs Learn From Artists?” are that in order to be successful you must be dedicated, creative, and innovative. The article discusses the principles in which the author believes an artist should posses, some of the principles are being a craftsman (“thinking by making”), relying on intuition when making decisions, and be a storyteller so that you work has purpose and meaning. The main points in the second article “Are Artists Entrepreneurs?” are that you should work in a team so that you can learn an innovate together, have passion, and challenge the status quo so that the society can greatly benefit.

Artists should learn from their entrepreneurial cousins that they should take advantage of resources so that they don’t have to carry all the work on their back, and also learn that working as an independent artist is not always the best route to take. I agree that artists are entrepreneurs,  I feel that both are trying to get their ideas across to society, and that they both are innovators in the sense that they want to express ideas that can be beneficial to all. Although, they both take different approaches as to how they like to make their ideas come to life they both are creators and inventors.

I agree with most of the 12 characteristics of artists, some of those are that people are humanists, I agree with this because artists like to connect with their audience so they pay attention to details and emotions so that their work captures your attention. Also, that they are craftspeople, artists do “think by making” for most artists they must at least attempt to make some kind of product so that they can decide wether or not to stick with that project or idea. Another principle I believe in is that artists work well under constraints, from personal experience I feel that a more quality product comes from guidelines, and that when you have a certain quota to meet you are able to produce an idea or product that will fulfill the desire of society. If you have a very broad open ended assignment, then you may not be able to collect enough information so that the consumer is satisfied. A principle that I would add to the list would be that, artists should be accepting of other ideas, so that they can view perspectives of other artists that may even influence their work in the future.

Overall from the information provided in these articles I believe that entrepreneurs and artists both come from a similar background, both strive to be innovative, provide a interesting idea or product to society, and most importantly express their own creative thoughts.
