Blog Post #12 Part 2 -1st Year Seminar

I found the study abroad presentations really informative, although i have already visited the international study office i didn’t know about the option for traveling in the summer while taking a class in the spring. I would love to study abroad to either Germany, Ireland, or England. I would like to go to those places because i am very in to photography and all of those places are very beautiful and would be great picture opportunities. I think that i am going to try to study abroad the summer of my sophomore year so that i can have some more time to think about where i want to go and figure out the finances.

Blog Post #11 Part 1- 1st Year Seminar

Seeing the alumni presentations were awesome! I really like seeing old St. Edwards students and how far they have come since they graduated. A lot of the alumni were able to give us ideas of were their work has taken them and how they were able to get jobs etc. It was cool being able to see how everyone had such diverse jobs and how they were able to land them. It gives me an idea of what it will be like when i go out to look for jobs. I mostly enjoyed seeing the graphic design alumni, because since that is my major i liked to see what jobs they had and what my future could hold. They all looked pretty content with their jobs, which gives me confidence about getting a job later. I think the alumni presentations were good for us to see because they show whats in store after college not only from just regular college students but St. Ed students.

From Taste to Aesthetic -Visual Studies I

In the book’s chapter from taste to aesthetic it talk about how the visual culture of aesthetic has evolved and how it perceived through out different periods of time. First, in the earlier years plays weren’t recognized as a visual beauty because people didn’t understand the concept of aesthetic and how it was suppose to be enjoyed and what the plays beautiful.

Then later in the chapter it evolves to people becoming more and more familiar with the idea of aesthetic and how it was from personal pleasure. They started to realize the different between taste which is based on what people liked as a whole at that time to then understanding aesthetic which is their visual pleasure. This is important because then people start t develop a better understanding of how beauty may be different for all people and how artwork can be viewed in different ways.

I think that this article was a good read, because it show how society has now gotten overly attached to aesthetic and were this idea originated from. This really shows the evolution of how aesthetic grew from not being very well known or understand to now where it is in our everyday lives and how it effects everything we do. It is good for the development of thought and how taste and aesthetic have changed from different time periods.

Blog Post #10 Part 2 -1st Year Seminar

The alumni presentation were really cool, and i thought they were really inspirational. Seeing students work and what they have accomplished i thought was nice to see because it shows how much they have down and their stories on how they create their work. I liked seeing alumni present because they are experiencing college at the same time we are so it is kind of like an incite of what to expect in our later years in college. I really enjoyed seeing everyone’s different styles and also see what they are doing to get recognized in the art field. They showed me that its okay to change your mind multiple times and also how much work and effort it takes to be recognized.

Memento- Visual Studies I

Memento is a creative and innovative movie, which tells the story of a man experiencing a condition of memory loss. The movie contains visual elements of going back and forth from black and white and then going back to color. I think that this gave the movie a uniqueness and also was a good way to tell the story. Although the story is told backwards the way they designed the movie was to tell a part of a story and then cut to the black and white. I think this was a good way to tell it, because it is able to give the viewer time to think about what happened but also still demand their attention since it all will connect in the end.

I think that telling the story backwards was a very unusual but wonderful way to tell the story of Leonard. I think it was a good way to organize the movie because it confuses the viewer at the beginning but then once they catch on to what is happening it makes you pay attention to everything. In order for you to understand his story you were required to focus on the movie which was smart on the directors part, because then the viewer gives their full attention. I think that if the movie was made it a regular chronological time sequence it wouldn’t have had the same effect on the viewer of the film.

Overall i felt that the movie presented how when making quality work everything is done for a reason and order is a very important part of art making. The order of how you show pieces or put pictures together is important because it engages your audience and makes your work more interesting. When you have a unique order than it draws people to look at your work longer and get them to think more. Also, the design of the  movie and how it went back and forth from black and white and color, is very important. It shows how the way you present your work is ultimately  how you will get the viewers attention. This is an example of another way to make your work unique from others.

Blog Post #9 Part 1 -1st Year Seminar

The faculty presentations were very interesting and i enjoyed being able to see the work of our professors. I thought that it was nice that we were able to see all of you all work, because although a lot of my professors are artists we don’t really get to view their work since we are busy working on class assignments. From the presentations i was able to learn about some of your stories and how they inspired your work and also all the time that you all spend on creating your works. I liked being able to see professional work rather than always focusing students works in the progress. It gave me inspiration of how you have to be very patient with your work but that it definitely pays off in the end.
