Schindlers List Blog- Visual Studies I

Schindlers List

Schindlers List was a great piece of artwork that told a great story. I felt that the design of the movie was very well put together, and that they did a great job at aesthetics that would compliment the mood of the movie. Also, at the end of the move Schindler talks about how he failed at not saving enough lives, which was inspiring because he was always striving to be more successful. I took that design is very important, telling a story is very important, and that failure motivates success.

The design in the movie was very pleasing to the eye when they made the movie they decided to make it in black and white so that the time frame felt correct. I think that when making artwork we should focus on making sure that it is going to compel the viewer. If we are trying to give a certain vibe to our art piece we need to make sure that it is correct what we are trying to portray.

They also told an amazing and enticing story about World War II. When creating artwork we should try to make sure that we are including a story. We want the viewer to feel connected to the artwork emotionally. This movie was great at creating emotion so that the person felt connected, and as artists we should try to get people to feel the same way when we are creating art.

At the end of the movie Schindler talks about how he felt that he didn’t do enough and that he could have saved more lives. Throughout the movie he was scared to fail and so he continued to try and save as many people as he could. We should learn from that, and take that we should always strive to do more than we can. Although failure is okay and you can always learn from your mistakes, we should always put everything we have into making our art.

Lisa Le Feuvre- Strive to Fail

I enjoyed how Lisa talked about how failure is only subjective, and it is only a failure if you let it be. Lisa says that although most people see failure as a bad thing, artists can make it something worthwhile by using it as motivation not disappointment. I took that art comes from failure, you should embrace your failure, and it also inspires new ideas.

I agree with Lisa when she says that art comes from failure, because if we never fail we would never be able to progress. We need to learn how to try something different even though it might not work because we can always learn from the mistakes we make. In order to be successful you have to try new things you can always stick with your comfort zone.

Embracing your failure once it happens is the most important thing to do. If you don’t then you will just end up sticking with things you already know how to do which is not the point. It leads to bigger and greater things, artists can always work with what they have we are innovators and can easily find ways to improve of renovate something.

Failure can also inspire new ideas, as mentioned we learn from our failure which in turn leads to knew ideas and new ways to create art. Lisa also mentions how art is subjective and it is okay to have a tree coming out of someone’s head, but as long as you can have a reason to be that way. All artists have different styles and although one person might not like it doesn’t mean it is a failure. Artist’s messages aren’t always comprehended so it is okay to have something that doesn’t make sense because it proposes a question.

TED Talk with Dan Phillips Blog- Visual Studies I

Ted Talk with Dan Phillips

In the TED talk with Dan Phillips I thought it was fascinating how he uses recycled material to build houses. I really enjoyed how he has appreciated things that the building industry says isn’t useful anymore. Dan Phillips does a really great job at making something that “isn’t useful” and making it have a purpose by building a home. I took from his talk that when we make mistakes that they don’t have to be bad that we can use them in different ways, we can always use old work again it is never useless, and when making artwork we should try to make something people don’t expect.

Dan talked about how when builders see that a glass tile is warped they just automatically throw it away because they want everything perfect, he then says that those items that they throw away he takes and uses them for his projects. I thought this was awesome because he says that instead of throwing them way you could just make them all like that. I took that in my artwork If something doesn’t go as planes then I could just make them all have the same mistake in them. Our mind think in patterns and so if a person sees one flaw it will bring a negative visual aspect, but it you put the flaw in all of them it can trick the mind into thinking that it is suppose to be that way.

Also, going along with the idea of the last paragraph, all of our work it useful. Dan says that he recycles everything to make his house so nothing goes to waste. This can also go along with our artwork. None of the pictures that we take are ever a waste; we can always use them in one way or another. We can recycle our artwork and make them have more than one use. This idea can open up so many options hen creating artwork because even though we may not think we have something to work with we can always go back and use something that is old.

Lastly Dan talks about a passage he read in a book saying that we try to feed expectations that people have, but what he does is fills them in a way that you would not expect. So when we are making projects we should try to bring something new to the table, we should give you something that you don’t expect. Creating interesting work is all about innovation; we want people to be interested. People will not notice anything about you if you follow the norm, we should think out side the box. Failure isn’t always a bad thing, because you can always use that to inspire or fuel another idea.

Blog Post #4- 1st Year Seminar Visual Studies

Part 1

I really enjoyed being able to see the upperclassman’s blogs, because it gave me some insight on what I need to focus on in my oncoming years in college. I noticed that square space seems to be a good choice for when i deicide to start my website, I really like how customizable it is and how you can give it your own sense of style to make it fit to your personality. I though that Maria’s website was really nice and how she made it simple and pretty easy to follow. I think that her blog was a direction i would like to follow in the sense of making it simpler so that the blog looks fresh and not crowded. I like how they told us what to present and not present when trying to get internships and how you should cater to the people you are presenting it to. Overall, I thought that it was really helpful and informative.

White Balance- Visual Studies I

I personally liked the cloudy white balance setting in these pictures, because I feel like it was the truest to the lighting in the room. Also, I think that it has a good balance of yellow and blue so that the room doesn’t look too light or dark.

Aperture Priority- Visual Studies

I used a low aperture of 3.8, so that the background of the street is blurred out and the focus is on the street pole.

I used the aperture 4.8, to get the light in the bulb focused the most. This makes the light stand out more rather that having the whole picture in focus.

I chose to use the aperture 5.6, because it gives and even balance so everything is in focus. I wanted not only the sign but also the sky in focus.

I used the aperture 6.3, which is still low but also since it was brighter outside it was better to use. I wanted for the tiny details on the flower stand out from the grass behind it.

Tunnel 57 Reflection- Visual Studies I

Tunnel 57 Audio

In the audio “Tunnel 57” I was able to really appreciate and learn that although things may not go as planned the first time around to never give up. The tunnel that Ralph Kabisch helped create was ruined when they first decided to dig under the berlin wall, and instead of giving up on it they deicide to out smart the East side and build it in the exact same spot. I took that in order for you to have success in your work you shouldn’t give your self the option of failure, because you can always try again and it can be even than the first.

Secondly, I took that we should learn from our mistakes. When the west realized that their tunnel didn’t work out, they had to problem solve and figure out a way that would work for them. In order for me to create quality work I might have to try things more than once and find different ways to conquer what I am trying to accomplish. It’s okay to not get it right the first time, but you must learn from what you did wrong and out smart the problem.

Another lesson I learned from the audio was that although you never should give up and also learn from your mistake, is that first you need to recognize the problem. In order to be successful you must realize what is wrong so that you can over come it. If you continue to work around what the problem is it will never be fixed, always question your artwork to try and get the flaws that you don’t want eliminated.

“Tunnel 57” was a great story and I was able to take a lot out of it. When creating work in the future I will try to recognize my problem, then I will learn from what went wrong and make it even better. Lastly, I will try to never give up on my projects, because it can turn into something that can make an impact.

Blog Post #3 Part 2- 1st Year Seminar Visual Studies

1. I think the strongest aspect of my work so far is being able to find a good setting to set up my tripod for my long exposure pictures. I think thats the direction i want to be going with my assignment so i think i am able to capture some good scenes.

2. My weakest aspect of my work is trying to get everything in focus more to create a better quality picture.

3. I can improve on setting my settings, so that they better fit what I’m trying to capture.

4.  My project could be strengthened conceptually, by maybe creating a deeper meaning behind the pictures I’m taking, so in this case I could take a lot more pictures so that people will be able to grasp my concept.

5. Technically, I feel like my pictures could be improved (like mentioned earlier) by fixing the camera settings, and playing with them more when I’m taking pictures.
