Wednesday, Sept. 10: The Tunisian Revolution

Today we’re going to take a close look at the uprising in Tunisia that began in December 2010, as you read in Battle for the Arab Spring p. 64-95.

We’ll watch this video by the Tunisian hip-hop artist El Général.

We’ll return to the ideas of the conflicting goals of the Washington Consensus and the Arab Human Development Report to talk more about the “revolting conditions” that pushed the Tunisian people over the brink of revolution and analyze some of the outcomes for Tunisia and the wider region of the Middle East and North Africa.

On Friday we’ll look at our first reading from Diaries of an Unfinished Revolution, Sghir’s “Greetings to the Dawn” and I’ll introduce you to our final digital project for the semester. As you read Sghir’s “diary,” think of it as a street view of the events leading up to and following the “Jasmine Revolution.” Be prepared to share your ideas about the difference between such a personal perspective and what you understand from reading bird’s-eye views like Battle for the Arab Spring.
