Friday, Sept. 5: Setting Up Digital Projects Part One

In class today we are going to start setting up one of the basic pieces of our digital projects: Diigo social bookmarking.

Creating your Diigo account and join the CULF 3331 Group.

1. Open this link to sign up for Diigo. Choose a user name that I will recognize as one of the students in this class. You can use just your first name and last initial if you want some level of anonymity. Complete the verification process.

2. Once you’ve created your account, open the link to our group, CULF 3331: “Middle Eastern Revolution.”

3. Request to join the group. I’ll approve them in class so you can start adding to the group.

4. To practice with Diigo, open the “Resources” page from the menu at the top of our blog. Skim through the resources and find a page that looks interesting to you. Copy it’s URL (the address that appears in the navigation bar.)

5. From your Diigo homepage, click the “Add” button and choose “Bookmark.” Paste the URL you copied into the text box that appears. You can mark it “Read later” if you want, but do try to add some tags that capture the keywords or significance of the bookmark. At the bottom of the pop-up window, choose “Share to a group” and select “CULF 3331: Middle Eastern Revolution.” Your bookmark should now appear in the CULF 3331 group.

6. Try it again! Once you’ve got the hang of bookmarking and tagging things this way, you can add an Chrome extension that puts a Diigo button in your tool bar. This button makes it very easy to bookmark directly from any webpage without having to paste the URL to Diigo. I recommend trying this one at home.
