Hello Readers,

Recently my Social Media and PR group has established a relationship with a client to begin working on a semester long project. This project will consist of a presentation to help this client reach its goals and learn more about a social media outlet of their choice. For the next couple weeks I will actively attempt to post on this blogs answers to our client’s questions, and any helpful tidbits they or any other reader could use.

1. Advertising Events

The internet has an abundance of sources from event planners, marketers, and other bloggers all with great tips and tricks to make sure your event is a success. Advertising an event can take on a different challenge depending on what social media platform you decide to use. So for the sake of this blog post I will  be focusing on advertising events using Twitter.

Step 1.

Create a Twitter Account- You can either create an account specific for your organization or maybe even juggle multiple accounts under your name (if this is the case apps such as Hoot Suite will be needed). You might not however want to use your own personal Twitter account as your even account because your newly acquired twitter followers might not understand your random Boy Meets World references.

Step 2.

Don’t Be Lazy- Your new followers can tell when you haven’t put in the time or effort to really engage your audience. Don’t forget to customize your Twitter background, and absolutely DO NOT engage your followers with a twitter account still rocking the unhatched egg icon. This gives the appearance of either a rushed event or an organization that does not know what they are doing on social media.

Step 3.

Create and even hashtag- Create a hashtag that is your own to funnel all web traffic about your event into one concise place. Encourage your event participants to tweet about your event using your hashtag to make yourself visible on social media. With this hashtag it can open up huge opportunity for live tweeting at your event and even displaying these tweets on a Twitter wall. This creates a new dynamic for participating at an event and can even be made fun by adding prizes for the most engaged attendees.

Step 4.

Document- Use apps such as Storify to document your event. Storify allows you to create an interactive display of all tweets and photos posted on Twitter or Facebook about your event. This is great way to document your successes and share your accomplishments with your community.
