For 4/24 on Blackboard: Discussion of the Revolution, including Madero’s  Presidency. 

  1.  Read Sherman, Meyer, and Deeds text, 361-387, Chapters 26-27.
  2. MLA Students should also read, The Mexican Reader, 333-338, and post a 1 page summary of the Magon article.
  3.  By 4/24 @ 9 PM, post answers to two of the questions below.
  4.  By 4/26 @ Noon, comment on at least one other student’s posting.

I. Imagine that you are one of the Flores Magon brothers  who is still alive and is still publishing Regeneración.

A. Explain what your goals were in your 1906 “Liberal Plan.” Assess how these goals were affected by cultural / political globalization.
B. You are quoting two of your articles, one about the Cananea Copper Company strike and the other about the Rio Blanco textile strike. What did you say about these two events?
C. In another article, you describe Mexico in 1910, as it celebrated one hundred years since the signing of its Declaration of Independence.
D. You write an article describing Francisco Madero and his presidency. Explain if  he supported you, and if you supported him and why.
E. You examine Madero’s rule, what happened to Madero, and why you think that this happened.

Estimated time: reading- 4 hours;; formulating answers and reviewing other students’ postings and formulating comment/s- 2.5 hours. Total= 6.5 hrs. Additional time for MLA students: 2 hrs.

(5/1) 6th Campus Discussion meeting– -Discussion of the Revolution and its effects on contemporary Mexico.

In addition, we will discuss the role of women in the revolution. We will view a short slide presentation on women’s roles in this period.

  1. Read Meyer et al Chapters 28 – 30 (388-421). MLA Students should also read, The Mexican Reader, 297-297-333; 364-374; and be prepared to discuss these orally.
  2. View the documentary, The Mexican Revolution (in Spanish), or view the documentary Mexico: Revolution and Rebirth in the Scarborough-Phillips Library’s Films on Demand.  Review of the documentary is due. (See syllabus # III B).
  3. Submit a question, as well as three paragraphs total about the three most important insights gleaned, one from each chapter.
  4. Newspaper article and analysis are due. (See # III D on syllabus)
  5. Quiz is due by May 5th at 6:00 P.M.

II. Revolutionary “heroes”

A. You are Pascual Orozco Jr. Describe your backgound and the role you played in the revolution. Also explain your Plan Orozquista.
B. You are Emiliano Zapata.  Describe your background. What role did you play in the revolution? What was your Plan de Ayala?
C. You are Pancho Villa. Assess your role in the revolution. Why did some consider you a bandit, while others felt you were a hero?
D. You are Victoriano Huerta. Trace how you came to power. Why did the U.S. intervene during your presidency?

III. You are one of the Flores Magon brothers again, writing some more for Regeneración.

A. What did you write about Carranza and his presidency?
B. Now you are quoting an article you wrote on the Constitution of 1917 and its major provisions.
C. You then quote one of your articles on the effect the Revolution had on life in Mexico.
D. Finally, you are writing a current article assessing what the 1910-20 revolution accomplished. Did the revolution accomplish all you had hoped for? Explain.
E. Examine the ways globalization affected this revolution

IV. Women in Mexico

A. Evaluate the role women played during the revolution.
B. Who were the soldaderas?
C. How did the 1917 constitution affect women?
D.When did Mexican women win the right to vote? Anyone know? Look it up if you don’t. You will be surprised.
