MEXICO FROM THE AZTECS TO THE REVOLUTION

4/03: Blackboard Discussion – Discussion of middle of nineteenth century and the Juarez years.

1) Read Meyer text, 300-319 (chapters 21-22)
2) By 4/03 @ 9 PM, post answers to two of the questions below, one from Chapter 21 and one from Chapter 22.
3) By 4/05 @ Noon, respond to another student’s post.

Be prepared to answer the following questions:

I. Chapter 21, “The Restored Republic, 1867-76: Nascent Modernization”

A. Analyze Juarez’s reforms in these areas:

1. Economic
2. Educational
3. Law and Order

To what extent is the Juarez Reforms related to globalization?

B. Assess why the Liberals were divided.
C. Analyze if Mexican history would have been different if Juarez had lived into the early 20th century? Explain.
D. Assess the accomplishments of Sebastian Lerdo’s regime.
E. Examine the charges that Porfirio Diaz made against Lerdo.

II. Chapter 22, “Society and Culture in the Middle of the Nineteenth Century”

You were traveling through Mexico during this period:

A. What was life like in the rural areas?
B. Who were the “three classes”? What kinds of social activities were available to these classes in Mexico? Do you think that all three classes experienced the activities in the same way? Why?

Estimated time: reading- 5 hours;; formulating answers and reviewing other students’ postings and formulating comment/s- 2.5 hours. Total= 7.5 hrs.

For 4/10: 5th Campus Discussion meeting– -Discussion of the Porfiriato and modernization in the later half of nineteenth century and early 20th century.

  1. Read Meyer et al, chapters 23-25, 321-357, and submit your question, as well a total of three short paragraphs on the three most important insights gleaned, one from each chapter.
  2.  MLA Students should also read, The Mexican Reader, 273-293; and be prepared to orally summarize these articles in class. 
  3.  Newspaper article and analysis are due.
  4.  Quiz will be distributed.

Be prepared to answer the following questions:

III. Chapter 23, “The Porfiriato: Order and Progress”

A. Assess Diaz’ plan for “Order and Progress.” Please look up the word “Positivism” in a dictionary or encyclopedia as that will help you to understand Diaz’s ideas.
B. Define the following:

1. Jose Limatour
2. The cientificos

C. Briefly evaluate “progress” in the following areas:

1. Railroads
2. Mining
3. Oil
4. Other industry

D. Analyze the role of globalization in both Diaz’s industrialization efforts and in daily life of the upper class in Mexico during this period.

IV. Chapter 24, “The Costs of Modernization” and Chapter 25, “Society and Culture during the Porfiriato”

A. Examine some of the demographic changes and urban improvements during this time.
B. You are a member of the upper class. Describe life in Mexico under Diaz. Now answer this question as a member of the lower class. Describe life in Mexico under Diaz.
C. Interpret the cartoon on p. 353.
D. Discuss cultural and intellectual achievements.
E. You are a poor urban worker or a peon. What were “the costs of modernization”? Was modernization worth the price?

V. Women during the Porfiriato:

A. What occupations could Mexican women pursue by the end of the nineteenth century?
B. Evaluate the statement, “one of the underlying premises in [Mexican] feminist thinking was that the philosophy enhanced the traditional role of women as wives and mothers.” This is not in your text. Think about what it means.
C. Examine the role of globalization in the Mexican feminist movement.

Estimated time: reading- 4 hrs; formulating insights and a question- 1 hr; locate newspaper article and write analytical summary-1.5 hrs.; class time-3 hrs. Total= 9.5 hours.  Additional time for MLA students: 1 hr.
