Visual Studies Seminar: Blog Post #10

Part 1: For probably the first time this semester, there were speakers who work in something that I actually genuinely care about- the video game industry. They were Bryant Wood, Eva Tran, and Gary Gattis and they all work at a company called Spacetime Studios. Bryant is a Senior Designer, Eva is the Live Art Lead, and Gary is the CEO. A few things that a game designer is responsible for is molding the player experience, system design, and content design. A few things that an artist in this industry is responsible for are things like concept art, animation, and environment/ character modeling. Something new I learned through their talk is that whereas large studios will usually have in-house professional storytellers, small studios may have to rely on the game designers to do the storytelling due to lower budgets and fewer staff.

Part 2:

Question for Hollis Hammonds:

What advice would you give to those who want to be good at drawing or making art in general but really struggle at it? I feel like I’m incapable of drawing well.
