Blog Post #2

I have found that for the most part, I use my time wisely. For the other parts I mostly waste my time by sleeping, being on my phone, or by watching T.V. . For school things I mostly procrastinate a lot but I manage to get everything done in time. I feel like on the weekends I waste a lot of time because I don’t know the Austin area real well so I never really go anywhere outside the places I know. I wish I could easily learn all the roads and routes instead of learning the hard way by driving everywhere and getting lost. I feel like if I knew more about Austin then I wouldn’t waste my weekends away by being on my phone or just watching T.V.

This was from my senior year of high school at one of our soccer games. I really admire this coach as a actual coach and one of my best teachers. He was always good with being strict with the players but never overdoing it.

I was VERY involved in FFA throughout my 4 years in high school and starting my junior year I went out to take pictures at our show. This is Kyle Pasket who has always tried hard every year to win showmanship and a spot in the auction. This past year he finally made it.

Creativity is the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of artistic work. As a photographer and as just a person in general, I struggle with creativity. Often I joke about how “my creativity has died years ago” and that’s basically true. I have a hard time coming up with different ideas and concepts that most other people can easily come up with and understand. This has shaped me becoming a sports photographer because although creativity is still needed, there isn’t as much required as say a fashion photographer.

The very first video that I watched was “Stellar”, and it was very eye appealing. Personally the first time I watched it I thought it was very strange and had a very trippy and psychedelic vibe to it all. I then decided to watch it while listening to music and for my second time and somewhat understood it. There were different bright colors mixed with white spots as stars and it gave off a galaxy view. At the end of the video he said that he wanted to be a “visual musician” and he definitely achieved it. I ended up watching it a couple more times after the original two because it was very engaging and kind of addicting, like I wanted to see more and more.

After listening to the Spoon interview I got a broader view into all the creativity that goes into making music and how to keep it entertaining to the listener. You realize that music (or other art) can start out one way and end up completely different in the end, and that that is  what makes it great. Jim Eno, the drummer, moved to more beat oriented styles and combined different backgrounds to enhance the song. They took different parts that may not have seemed like it would have worked and joined it together to actually make a catchy song. Playing with different aspects of music helped made it great and it was creativity that made them pursue on with the song and making it have a different, but better, sound.

I finished by watching the Amy Tan video about the creative process. Creativity has different principles and different questions that you have to ask yourself to fully understand it. You must ask yourself why and how things happen in order to furthermore understand them. Her “observer effect” made me realize that if you search for an “about” too hard you will only write about that “about” and what you were supposed to find or hoped to find is no longer there. The answer to creativity is so obvious and yet it isn’t, by questioning things you will eventually find the answer.

I really did like all of these videos and listenings because they all tied together with creativity. There was so much creativity in Stan Brakhage’s video with all the beautiful colors mixing and unmixing with each other. Creativity was used in Spoon’s song by thinking outside of the box and combining different types of music together to create one awesome sound. Finally Amy Tan helps us to try to grasp what creativity really means and even though there is uncertainty in everything, luck, will, and faith will help you get through it. All together they helped me be more aware of what creativity means and how one can incorporate it in art.

This reading challenged me mentally because it was very hard to understand and grasp what the authors overall point was. When I first read the title I had thought that the whole article would be about just design but it turned out to be more about the history of it all. Although some parts were difficult to grasp, I did understand the main points of her writing and how design is ever changing along with the world we live in. The reading helped me to be more aware of design and how many things revolve around it.

I had not realized that by the use of design, one can show their authority and power, for example the Taj Mahal, and that this is used all the time on buildings in cities. If it is an important building it will have a more powerful look than say just a regular office building. Design often results in conflict with the economy because, industrial design makes designers suppress their work by only having mass productions of products based on efficiency and not so much on design. People view design as a management resource and link it to the market.

Design is an industry that can never die because new styles of different products forces people to buy it and get rid of the old style. Bigger name brands with different and complex patterns can be appeasing towards other people. With the help of design other products can be transformed into different uses. I found the statement “Society has no mercy for those who can’t keep up with the times” very true. If one person has the newest IPhone, then everybody else wants it or has to have it, thus keeping designers constantly busy.

This article helped me grasp that designers will always have endless possibilities to design different things due to technology along with other circumstances in people’s daily lives. Design truly is the realization of our world and how we can modify it to make it better. Although sometimes it can lead to separating people based on different tastes, it can also bring them back together by finding a common ground. Design greatly increases how we look at the world and shows us how many things reflect around it.

Personally, I really, really, enjoyed this reading. This article made me think back to the many times that people had doubted me in becoming a photocommuncations major and telling me that I would never go anywhere. It almost made me want to print the article out and send it to a few people personally as a “I told you so” proof that I could make something of myself. The writing really gave me hope, and kind of calmed my anxiety towards going into the art field. It made me feel like I am headed in the right direction.

One of the points that surprised me was how medical students are now having art components added to their educational structure. Different art subjects help them by either connecting better with their patients, or helping find subtle details in their patients. Japan has changed their system also, and GM claims that it is in the art business. Corporate recruiters for top companies are going to art schools in search of talent. This makes me excited for my future with an art degree and confidence going forward.

Society is progressing more and more to become filled with creators and empathizers. People who are in the arts field are set for a more right-brain thinking world and will go farther than the typical “business major”. Most of the people that enter the work force will have their jobs moved overseas because they can be done cheaper there or done by a computer. I was also shocked to learn that more art grads are occupying key corporate positions than other majors. Also how more American’s work in arts, entertainment, and design than as lawyers accountants and auditors.

This article really put into perspective how much art really is needed in the every growing corporate world and how it effects other jobs too. It has helped changed my narrow-mindedness towards having or getting an art degree. The author had me laughing at the way he phrased things for example “potters would be driving BMW’s while computer programmers would be scrubbing the counters at Chick-fil-a” or, how he described the GM executive as a “seventy something piss and vinegar marine who claims GM is in the art business”. The reading really helped me truly realize that the MFA truly is the new MBA.

Part 1: The first article ” What entrepreneurs can learn from artists” talks about the ways artists do things and the different traits they have that could help out entrepreneurs. The second article “Are Artists Entrepreneurs?” talked more about the similarities between the two and how each of them could work together and succeed.

For the most part, artists already have most of what it takes to be entrepreneurs but the only other thing is possibly having a little bit of a background in business.

Before reading the articles I had never realized how artists were so much like entrepreneurs but, after reading I do agree that artists are entrepreneurs. The 12 different points all tied into what entrepreneurs do and really helped to show how they had so much in common.

I agreed with many of the points given. The very first point talks about how artists can create new meanings for different things and how innovation revolves all around that. Also the second point about how artists can feel for others because a entrepreneur must also be able to do this to get in touch with his or her businesses, workers, and anything that they are investing in. Along with the fourth point that talks about how artists have a sense of wonder and possibility, innovators must have this too in order to have bigger and better ideas for the future.

The only other point that I would add to this article is how artist’s are more humbler than most entrepreneurs and I personally think that if you have a sense of self-effacement you will go far.

Part 2: My score was a 4 on the grit scale (5 being the highest) so I think that I do have plenty of grit.

A way that I could possibly increase my grit is by sticking to things I set my mind to and not feeling discouraged after setbacks.

When I first read the title of “The Photograph” I had thought that it was just about a certain photograph and the author’s experiences with it. As soon as I got through the first sentence I realized it was about all photographs but more focused on just black and white. In the past I did not realize how someone could retain so much from a black and white photo but now I can understand the different concepts. This reading made me take a second look at how I should look at photography and helped me to understand black and white photography a little bit more.

I am a person who prefers shooting regular digital colored photos than black and white but, I attained that black and white photos can more clearly reveal the significance of the photograph by showing details without the concepts of actual colors. I connected with the author by agreeing with his view on how people who think photos are just “states of things reflected onto surfaces” are naïve and plain thinkers. The phrase “beauty of the conceptual universe” was used to describe black and white photos, the author also talks about how black and white cannot be real but how it should be because then things would all be interpreted differently. This reading challenged me psychologically because it made me realize how people can see pictures in a different way and have different retentions from seeing it, especially black and white.

I admired his view on the intentions of photographers because it really showed what a photographer wants to or actually does achieve when going out and taking pictures. In summary, photographers want to show the world their concept of it all and to have models (photographs) that prove their point or to have someone see it from their point of view. Photographers want to forever be remembered by everyone for their work and I agree with that because I am the exact same way. I want my photos to be remembered and for me to be thought of when people see them. I also correlated with how the author said “Society is used as a feedback mechanism for a photographer’s work” because in the end, that is who ultimately judges your work.

The reading helped shed a light on black and white photography and how it is often underrated. People have different concepts of photos and the author had a very interesting point of view. In the past I did not realize how someone could retain so much from a black and white photo but now I can understand the different concepts. The passage helped me to comprehend concepts of black and white photography and to look for a bigger meaning. All in all, the text provided made me want to take a look at photography in a different perception and have a different insight into black and white photography.
