The students took notes on how to perform experiments while including all the necessary variables for success. My cooperating teacher wanted to try this lab in an inquiry fashion, giving students loose guidelines and lots of information but then allowing them to completely design and script their own experiment. To ensure the least amount of confusion and conflict with inquiry, we demonstrated what the experiment would look like if we tested a certain variable. Then, students replicated the procedures with adjustments to fit their own variable. This was one of the most rewarding lessons to carry out.
