Nouveau réalisme: Yves Klein

Yves Klein was the leading member of the French artistic movement of Nouveau réalisme. He was also considered a important figure in post-war European art. Klein did Monochrome work, with his first public showing being in November of 1954.  The next exhibition he did was at the Iris Clert Gallery in April 1958, this exhibition was called The Void. For this he removed everything in the gallery space except a large cabinet, painted every surface white, and then staged an elaborate entrance procedure for the opening night. His work alongside Andy Warhol and Willem de Kooning, was among the top-five sellers at Christie’s Post-war and Contemporary Art sale in May of 2006. His painting Monochromatic Blue Sponge sold for $4,720,000. His work intrest me becuase I love the use of just one color, and how he is able to express certain emotions just by using the brush strokes in a certain way.  The other thing I love about his work is that he took a sponge and made it look like a flower. It was so simple, yet it captured peoples attention and sold for millions of dollars.
