Christopher Nolan created a genius work with this film “Memento” in that he completely disregarded the typical chronological order of movies. Instead, he tells the story backwards with the color segments of the film and a story within the story in chronological order in black and white. The story is also told with polaroids being taken in multiple parts of the colored segment of the movie, so that the main character can refer to them in order to “remember” past events. The key importance in this movie is its’ sequential order, even though most of the movie is not chronological, there is still a sequential. Nolan’s choice in telling most of the story backwards is what makes the movie as suspenseful and unpredictable as it is. When creating our final project, I feel I need to make sure the sequential order of the book serves a purpose just as this movie does. This movie demonstrated a very well done example of how we can stray away from the norm and be creative with our sequential order. Also, this movie gave me the idea of telling a story within a story for our book project. Overall, the sequential order must be important to the idea we want to portray in our project. If Nolan had put this story in a different order then his point would not have been as effectively executed.
