An artist that inspires me and that I also really like is the graffiti artist Banksy. If you don’t know, Banksy is a street artist from the United Kingdom who specializes in graffiti stencil art. He is primarily known for his controversial and political work that he displays at random places in any given city. Starting his career as a graffiti artist in the 90’s, Banksy has since become one of the most well-known street artists in the world. So why is he so successful? I believe he is successful because of the powerful message behind most of his work. Typically when we see street art, we just see words in a fancy font. But, Banksy puts a thoughtful message in almost every single piece of art he makes. For example, there is a wall in Israel called the West Bank wall. This wall was made to help prevent terrorism in Israel. Banksy painted a picture on this wall of two children imagining to be on a beautiful beach. This is a very intriguing image because it makes the viewer think about the evils of terrorism and that children should not be brought up in that kind of lifestyle. Also, the simpleness of his art is another factor of why I like him so much. Overall, Banksy has played a major role in inspiring me creatively. 

 

While taking these last pictures on South Congress, I tried making my common theme about vandalism and somewhat industrial objects. In my first favorite picture, I tried to implement the law of closure on the fire hydrant. In my second picture, I tried to show the law of similarity by photographing multiple bicycle racks in the same photo. Lastly, in the picture of the sign, I tried to use closure to make the viewer see the word “head” but understand that it’s supposed to say “ahead”.

 

Part 1

After using the time tracker worksheet for the past week, I realized how much time I spend doing certain activities. I noticed that I probably sleep too much, I like to watch tv and I eat at the same exact times almost every day. By filling out this chart, it made me realize how fast time goes by and how valuable it actually is.

 

Part 2

 

This is a painting I did of a cactus with watercolors over the summer. I am very interested in plants, especially cacti. My girlfriend bought me a cactus and it was sitting in front of me while I was trying to think of something to draw. I eventually drew the cactus then added the watercolor to make this piece.

This is a drawing I did with a pen over the summer. I did these drawings because all of these objects are things I find fascinating. I never fully finished it but now that I look back at it, I feel like it is complete. Overall, this was a very fun project to work on.

While going out to take pictures, one of the main subject matters I focused on was light and how to incorporate light with Gestalts principles. In my first picture, I tried my best at showing the law of closure and maybe even the law of common fate. I tried to use the edges of the speed limit sign to lead our eyes off of the picture. I also tried to capture the law of closure by not including the whole speed limit sign. In my second picture, I captured the law of symmetry by using the window by the light as a mirror. I thought it was a simple and effective way of showing this law. Finally, in my last picture, I captured the law of continuity. I achieved this by using the light bulbs to form lines and patterns within the photo. 

Part 1

1 . What are the main points of each article?

       The point of the first article is to inform the reader that people can learn a thing or two from artists. Artists have a nice understanding of this world and it would be nice for everyone, especially entrepreneurs, to understand how they think. The second article’s point is to show the similarities between entrepreneurs and artists.

2. What can artists learn from their “entrepreneurial cousins”?

       Artists can learn how to take risks and how to implement their dreams from an entrepreneur.

3. Do you agree that artists are entrepreneurs? why?

   Yes, I do believe that artists are entrepreneurs because they have the passion needed for these lifestyles. For the most part, entrepreneurs and artists typically think the same and have the same thought processes, which is enough reason for me to think that artists are entrepreneurs.Which of the 12 characteristics of artists do you agree with?

4. Which of the 12 characteristics of artists do you agree with?

       I agree with the characteristic of “Artists are like children”. Ultimately, I believe that an artist should be in touch with his or her’s inner child to make wonderful art. It’s hard to become more creative as we grow older, so having a mind like a child could change the way an artist sees and creates things.

5. What others would you add to the list?

       I would add to the list that artists are brilliant. Not everyone is blessed with a mind like artists. An artist’s mind can create things that are unimaginable to normal intelligence. If one were to think like an artist, they will be opened up to a whole new world.

6.Additional thoughts

      I thought these two articles were very informing and made me realize things that I have not thought of before. I had never considered an artist an entrepreneur before reading these articles, but now I do.

Part 2

  1. I would say that I have some grit but it is definitely something I should work on.

  2. Some things I could do to increase my level of grit are to stick to things I am passionate about and to never give up even if it seems like it’s the only thing to do. Having this motivation would increase my grit by a great amount.

After reading this recent passage about repetition, unity and variety, emphasis, and subordination, I found a few key points that became very interesting to me. The first point I found was that repetition can actually be good. Typically, in writing, we usually hear that repetition in a paper can be catastrophic. But, as I read this passage, I realized that repetition in art can be pleasing to a viewer’s eye. Another thing I found interesting is that balance in art is a major contributor to making pieces look aesthetically pleasing. Determining how much unity or variety is being used in a piece can either make or break it. Overall, I thought the passage was informing and it made me realize that art doesn’t have to abide by rules to be considered art.
