What Motivates you to make art?

My motivation for making art is inspired by taking advantage of the moment. Seeing things that other artists have made encourages me to find that same meaning for myself. I enjoy finding new processes of creating art and trying new medias.

How do you use color, form, space and other dynamics-

In many of my drawings I like to let the media speak for itself, along with allowing the same leniency in the subject of the image, as well as for my mark making. Other drawings that are more subjective studies where I am searching for ways of representing what I like, and usually these are influenced by outside sources like the ones I’ve listed. However There are points where I have mixed both of these ideas, and ways of working.

How do you view your craftsmanship?

There are areas such as drafting where I enjoy taking time in attempting to make it perfect. However I enjoy the accidents that occur when working and being challenging to work around it. My craftsmanship can involve a sketch, depending on the subject and media. The things that I sometimes struggle with when working in either direction are knowing when it is finished.

Artist Statement

The work presented here is of my progress since 2012

I obsess in my work a use of different media or in experimenting with new ways of seeing.Strong influences in my style come from graffiti, beginning from when I saw the movie style wars in High School.

I enjoy bringing together different media and styles together to create something original.

Part 1: Based on the notes you took during class, write a brief description and response to each of the Faculty presentations.

Hollis: In Hollis’s presentation she showed us her drawings, mural and installation works a long with other graphic novel drawings. I enjoy Hollis’s style and workflow, I think it showed how an artist can create and direct many different styles of projects and is an influence in trying new mediums.

Tammi : Tammis work displayed how interpretative ceramic pieces can be. By using forms and repetitions of shapes you can create meaning and allow the audience to indulge in the artwork.

Joe : Seeing Joes work shows how important it is to have knowledge of the tools and workflow in order to come out with successful shots, because he is shooting with film. I feel like it really showed a lot of care and attention detail and narrative within each of his photos.

Alex : Alex’s presentation was refreshing because I have not seen a lot of her work. Her paintings of her settings that were very minimal I enjoyed because of the large blocks of color in each of them.

Part 2: Create a 5-year plan. What are your long term goals beyond college? What do you need to do to accomplish those goals?

Get out of college ?

Year 1- Look for a job

Year 2- look for a job

Year 3- look for a job

Year 4- look for a job

Year 5- look for a job

Year 6- go back to college

Our speakers on Monday were from Space Time Studios, a local game development company. They mostly work on Moba video games for mobile devices. Their first title was Arcane Legends, and it was one of the original 2010 IPad launch titles. This philosophy for video games they wanted to work on revolved around the popularity of esports style games. The game industry they went on to explain revolves around long hours, competition, challenging customers and trying to stay afloat in the game market. I learned the different main roles that are present in video game companies, and how working in that role would look. I already had a good idea of what goes into games, It is something I have thought about going into, but it was really nice to hear a LOCAL game company speak on what they do in the industry and see the spreadsheets that all the fun stuff we enjoy on screen came from.

Part 1:

Matt Lankes worked as a set photographer for films such as boyhood, and fast food nation. He showed a lot of his portrait shots of famous people, the most well known he said was his picture of Sam Shepard which I believe he said was presented in a magazine. I enjoyed what Matt had to say about the psychological effects that the camera has on people, and also what he said about taking your opportunities as they come and To be bold and ask for photos during those moments. I thought it was special for him to come and speak to the school, and especially cool that he has photographed one of my friends.

Memento

While making a collage I watched memento in the background. The main character is looking for the man who killed his wife but cannot remember his name. People around him trick him day to day because of his condition, but he uses notes and photographs so that he is able to remember something that he will forget tomorrow. Immediately apparent to me was the feeling of being immersed in the mental state of the main character. Through sudden breaks and cuts the audience is able to understand the feelings the main character goes through, waking up and not remembering the scene before. It gave me less of a feeling of amnesia but more of a feeling of being stuck in purgatory, maybe thats what amnesia feels like? I thought that the film effective is keeping up with this idea, however because I was working on stuff while watching the film, it became a little confusing when the black and white scenes show up. The important things I am able to take away from this film in the use of sequence are that through the repetition or beginning days and how the main character always seems to end up right back where he started unless he makes sure to remember something, and get closer to catching his wife killer.

Faith, PHCO portfolio

I really liked the photos that Faith shot, they make me wonder how long she has been shooting for. The website was clean looking and professional. Her presentation went well I feel and there were no long pauses.

Mary, GDES portfolio

Mary had a good looking website that made it easy for someone to understand what her style is and what to expect if they were to look into hiring her. I think that the presentation could have been more a fluid, with less pauses, it felt a little awkward.

Diana, ARTS portfolio

Diana’s presentation was dense, I think there was a lot to follow, but the website was effective and organized to display her work well.

John & Omar, IGST game developing in Unreal Engine 4

John & Omar did a good job in their presentation explaining the different elements that went into starting and getting into game design. I feel like it was effective in helping the audience understand what game design is if they had no idea what it was in the first place or how much effort that it takes.

Websites that I like:

http://www.hockneypictures.com/home.php

David Hockney’s official website looks like a standard professional artists website. What I like about it is that it has directories which it easy check out the medium and type of work you are interested in looking at.

Polygon.com

Polygon has an interactive layout and while I don’t like everything about it, I do like how the pages open up with mousing over tab categories.

Google.com

Simple layout and interface.

The Good company

http://shop.97allen.com

This website is one from a company that my friend works for in New York. I like this website because the homepage has a large picture that takes up the web pages white space. A long with having only a few possible tabs to open which makes it easier to find what you are looking for.

Trillcity.com

We re-did our website. Its alright!

My greatest strengths in art include: Attention to detail, vision, manual-skills, editing
For greater success in this course, I need to: Have a stronger sense of direction, understand limiting factors like time management, learn more from others

Computer skills:

My computer skills include: Photoshop, illustrator, procreate, video games
I still need to learn: More proficient in Photoshop and other digital art programs.

I need to work on these aspects of research and writing: Grammer, spelling, everything still.

Ken Sortais Started as an artist by doing graffiti when he was 16 because he had to quit his career as a professional golfer. Many of the subjects of his art are based on cartoons from Disney or Miyazaki because of their graphic nature.
I enjoy Ken Sortais’s work because it blends graphic art with the abstract along with the media of spray paint creating a message that is original and interpretative. Since discovering the work of Ken Sortais, Horfe, and the rest of the crew that they paint with it has impacted my work because it combines all the elements of graffiti, abstract, graphic, and cartoon art work into something that speaks to me and others who look at the graffiti scene, their work in refreshing. In this article Ken Sortais describes part of what has made his work so important to artists like myself when he says “I love the act of painting with my body, and the streets teach you different things to a studio.” From themeanderjournal.com

When I went to Highschool at American Youth Works, I had a fascination with how colors could create depth. Color by itself was the subject, and how I could play with it and add or subtract from it. I really wanted to be an artist, I wanted to do commission work. So I went around and asked people if they would be interested in having murals done, and managed to get work for one. I still enjoy messing around with color, however now I and am interested in trying to create more subjective work.
