End Term Dialogue

1 How many hours of practice time per week would you consider excessive? How many hours would not be enough to create sophisticated work? Where are you situated?

I would consider anything over 2 hours a day to be excessive. I don’t know if I can say for certain how many hours it would take to create sophisticated work. I would say about it would take over an hour to just come up with a idea and longer to create the work. With this I would say that I am behind on practice time, but I also have other classes to worry about.

2 What does the “next level” look like? What would the next level in the designs of your maps look like?

The next level would be better design skills and/or ideas. I’m not great on coming up with ideas for things especially if it is design related. Part of the next level could be some type of meditation to clear my mind and just think on whatever I have to do. The next level in the design of the maps would be to polish them up and make them more visually appealing. Below are how they are now.

3 What was some meaningful feedback you received about the maps and what did you do with that feedback?

Some feedback that really helped was on the first map we did. At first I just took a map of the campus to use, but after feedback I found it would be better to make my own. This was the first map that I used and the one that I made after the feedback.

4 Describe what level of challenge you encountered in the creation of your maps. What was the hardest part / what was the easiest part? What was the most enjoyable part of the process?

I encountered a few challenges on my first map. One thing I found hard was trying to figure out how to show certain things on the map, like where dogs can poop, and how to design a stroke that is unique for the type of walkway. The hardest part of making the maps was deciding what to do for the maps. The easiest was to get a layout done and then work from that. Coming up with the ideas for the maps was also the most enjoyable part.

5 Did you do anything else outside of class, extracurricular, related to art, design, or creativity?

I did. In my GDES1311 Lab 1 class we made a layout for a reading app. You could also say that the game I worked on and the animations were design related.

6 Whether positively, negatively or neutrally, how has your life outside of school impacted your school work?

Since October I feel like my life outside work has been affecting my school work and it only got worse over time up to now. I’ve had to deal with things that I never thought I would have to and have had to do some emotional growing. Before school was on my mind first but then it took a backseat. I’ve personally been through a lot emotionally and mentally in the past two months.

7 What does the most ideal classroom environment look/feel like to you? What does it mean to be part of a class? This semester, what was your part / role / contribution to this ideal vision? Looking back in the semester describe the physical location you think you were at your most optimum and flourished the most.

A classroom were I can feel like I can connect with people and feel comfortable in is the most ideal. Being part of a class means that I am not there to just learn the material, but to experience the class and its people. I don’t think I was a part of my ideal vision. I mostly just was there for the credit and that is a regret. I think I flourished in the feedback. I was glad to hear what other people had to say about my work and since I usually dislike things I make it was good for me to hear what people liked and where I could improve.

03 mid term dialogue

At the beginning of the semester we learned about the “expert hours” and how to to become an expert one must “practice” for a thousand hours. In the rubric the three levels for use of practice time are “CONSISTENT”, “UNEVEN”, and “SPORADIC”. In my own words, I would say that “CONSISTENT” means to practice everyday or at least on a schedule. “UNEVEN” means to practice on and off and not following a schedule. “SPORADIC” means to practice very infrequent or maybe once a week. Out of these I would say that I am at the “UNEVEN” level. I say this because I don’t have a schedule that I follow and I work on many different softwares in a week. Sometimes I will only work on a software if I have an assignment for a class. However I do work in a 3D modeling software called Blender every other day.

For the “sophistication of my work” part of the rubric, the levels are “HIGH”, “MEDIUM”, and “LOW”. In my own words, “HIGH” would have to mean that my work has some deeper complex meaning that people would have to discern from it. “MEDIUM” would mean that I am aware of what I want my work to mean and do when someone sees it. LOW means that my work has no meaning or purpose. With how I define the different levels I would have to say that I am at “MEDIUM”. Most of what I create has a purpose and meaning to it. For example, the symbols that created were for UI in a game. I knew that the symbol had to be noticeable and interesting enough to get a player’s attention, but it shouldn’t distract a player for too long from what they are doing. So when I made them I kept them simple and without a lot of details.

On the “use of feedback”, the three levels are “MEANINGFUL”, “USEFUL”, and “TRIVAL”. In my own words, “MEANINGFUL” would mean that I took the feedback and transformed my work according to the feedback. “USEFUL” means that I improved the work based on the feedback. “TRIVIAL” means that I took it into consideration, but did nothing with it. With these definitions in mind, I would say that I am at the “USEFUL” level because when I got feedback I would go back and improve on the things pointed out. Most of the feedback I got on the symbols was things like fixing lines or fill in more negative space.

For “level of challenge” the three levels on the rubric are “INTENSE”, “MEDIUM”, and “MILD”. In my own words, “INTENSE” would mean that I challenged myself a great deal. “MEDIUM” would mean that I challenged myself a little. “MILD” would mean that I didn’t challenge myself at all. I would that I am at the “MEDIUM” level since I had to learn a few new things and had a hard time with some of my designs.

For the “other expert experience” part of the rubric, the three levels are “Lots of Extra Stuff”, “Just the Class Assignments”, and “Other ‘Stuff’”. To put them in my own words and meanings, “Lots of Extra Stuff” would mean that I worked on other things outside the class stuff. “Just the Class Assignments” would mean that I only worked on class work. And finally, “Other ‘Stuff’” would mean that I didn’t get expert experience at all or for things that don’t pertain to any classwork. I would put myself at the “Lots of Extra Stuff” level because I got expert experience on a lot of other work than just in this class. One of the things I got expert experience with was on projects in Blender were I would watch other people who do 3D modeling for a living to see how they go about modeling.

For “social emotional development” in the rubric, the three levels are “MATURE”, “YOUNG”, and “ADOLESCENT”. For me the level of  “MATURE” would mean that my social emotional self is fine. “YOUNG” would mean that it could use some development. “ADOLESCENT” would mean that I need a lot of work. I would put myself in the “YOUNG” level because I am happy with how things are going for the most part, but I have a few things that are stressing me out. Currently I am overthinking the time it will take to complete homework and I am worried about what will happen after I graduate. I would like to have a better understanding of how much time homework will take and for the future I will work on getting the necessary skills to get a job after college.

Next is my “contribution to the climate” of the class, and the three levels of this are “WARM”, “ROOM TEMP”, and “COLD”. “WARM” for me would mean that I am getting to know the people in class and I’m interacting with them. “ROOM TEMP” would mean that I am being social with people that I already know. “COLD” would mean that I stay to myself. I am definitely “COLD”. I don’t really talk much with people and the times I do it isn’t much. I do know a few people in the class already, but I tend to just not interact with them and I can honestly say I don’t know why. I  would like to meet new people in class, and I’m doing that in my other classes, but in this one I’m not. I need to just try and talk with people and think of conversation starters. It will be hard for me, but I am getting better as I’ve been trying this semester to be more social.

If I had to say anything about your performance it would be that having when some assignments are due on canvas would help me to know how I need to spend my time. Currently I  am having trouble knowing what is due in the next couple of weeks and what to do for those assignments.

Current and Projected Expert hours

Sadly I do not have many hours towards my skills. Mostly the time comes from classes, but I do have some time out of class but it is not substantial. Just the basics. I am aiming to really work hard on getting hours in on my skills, not just this semester but from now on. I am going to have to work hard to overcome my own laziness, but I think I can do it. I am pushing myself due to the love I have for creating things.

South Congress Photos

This was the first photo that I took on South Congress. I saw it before I got out of the car and thought it was a good starting point. My goal was to find things that embody the gestalt principle of containment and I believe this did that.

This photo was the second photo that I took. The color used really caught my eye. I turn the lights and highlights up to being out the color a bit more.

This was one of my favorites. It was just so perfect for containment and unique that I had to photograph it. It also goes well with the two above it and they could be a series.

This is my favorite photo that I took. I enjoy just how random it is. Things out of place like this is what I was looking for on South Congress.

This is another one of my favorites. Out of all my photos I believe this one best shows off containment. I wish I could have gotten a better angle on it so that the building was out of frame.

This photo was taken o the side of Home Slice Pizza. I really like the color that was used for the painting, it really pops off the wall.

This semester has been a learning experience for me. Like most people their first semester help them to adjust to college life and that is the same for me, but it also allowed me to see how I live without parents around and what I am capable of doing with the time I had. I enjoyed this semester a lot and hope the upcoming one will be just like it.

Part 1:

I thought that the staff presentations were insightful and I learned a lot. Each had different types of art and how they got to where they are today.

Part 2:

My 5 year plan: To continue with my current major and to work towards jobs. Look for internships next year. Try to get my work out in the world. And get a job in video game design.

Part 1:

I took a lot away from the people at Space time Studios and I found it to be very insightful to how the video game industry operates. Each of the staff had a lot of information about what they do and the type of jobs that are available. Their advice was good to have as well. It allowed me to narrow down what I want to do in the future in the industry.

Part 2:

How fast did you find a job after college?

The presenters this time made me thing about my active life on campus and what opportunities can open up doing more. I thought a lot about doing study abroad and going to Japan or anywhere else that is provided. It would allow my to go to places that I have been wanting to go, while still working at school. Also I thought about doing student clubs and going to more events on campus to meet more people that have the same interest as I do like gaming and art.

I found that each of the presentations were put together well and enjoyed them greatly. I really liked  the one over Skype. He was doing what I like for work and found that I’ve seen some of his work before. I took a lot away from that and learned about the importance of doing internships and networking.
