The past two years studying graphic design have helped me grow in many different ways; from learning the basics of typography (such as hierarchy, grids, etc), to using effectively Illustrator to create posters, typefaces, learning to vectorize, and creating books in inDesign, I feel I’ve grown in the sense of how I see design now, I see it everywhere, I am always conscious of the elements of design around me. Walking down the street and seeing objects, people, cars, all help get inspiration for whatever I might do next. I see billboards and in my mind I think of the grid being used, the effectiveness of attention-getters, different design techniques that I might not know yet, and I think that the quality in my work improves every day.
I’ve learned that the way I work best in terms of translating what is in my mind and putting it successfully in paper, or create it digitally, is beginning with paper. Sketches, and many of them, are needed so that my mind can sort them out, create iterations, and find the style, idea, I had in my mind.
Today I am proud to say I might not know everything yet, but I know enough to be satisfied with how I’ve grown in my classes. I’ve worked hard to learn and improve, and I plan on keeping improving, to grow as a designer every day.

Elektra was created for my first Typography class, following a specific grid the typeface needed to be legible, creative and unique.

For our Graphic Design II class, we had to translate a new experience into a memento of the place, mine took the form of temporary tattoos. The packaging was also important for this project, and I chose to do a clean design that reflected my style. One of the things I often do with my projects is create my own fonts. Typefaces and what they reflect are very important to me, and I enjoy designing them to fit what I am doing at the moment. The tattoos represent two places: Uncommon Objects, which I had been before, and the patio porch of Magnolia’s Cafe, which I didn’t know existed until  this year. The tattoos have each a bit of different design and style, to fit both places. I chose to create iconic tattoos of things you can see in both places, such as the “Sorry, we’re open” sign at Magnolia’s or the famous Bunny-riding Cowboy sign atop the store.
This has been one of my favorite projects. I feel there’s a specific style in which I design most things, and it can be seen here. This project has made me grow both intellectually and in skills.

  8. Symbol Methodology: Addictions

    April 2, 2014 by dcuesta

    SymbolMethodology2

For the project I chose to do my iterations of a collection of symbols related to addictions. Inspired by what seemed a day full of conversations about what being an “addicted gamer” meant, or the famous “alcoholic”, and “potheads” in society represented, I chose 9 different addictions that fell into three categories: activity addictions, addictions of legal products, and the illegal drug addictions. My three symbols ended up being the combination of two addictions each:
    gaming/sex addictions
    marihuana/meth addictions
    alcohol/pill addictions
Working in black and white was challenging, but once the iterations began I felt I understood what a symbol is and how it should be represented.

  9. Ducky: Illustrator Exercise

    Ducky2

The duck was the first Illustrator exercise we had, and its purpose was for us to learn to create vectors and learn how to use illustrator. I quickly realized how important it was to master using as few anchor points as needed, a lesson which has helped me greatly throughout graphic design classes.

  10. Personal Geography: Road Map

I chose to create a map of my path from home to the university for my Graphic Design I class, because it is a  walk I take very often, and I enjoy observing what’s around me, and how I feel when walking/driving to school. Rather than be very specific with details, I wanted to express how I felt when going to school, symbolize what home means to me, and what the arts building, which was my endpoint, is a big part of my life. The map was my first one, and I felt I could’ve done much more to it, but I chose to leave the original version to be able to compare what my progress has been like with the other maps and more similar projects.
