ARTS 1311 – Shelter Project : Camera Obscura

As our final project in Foundations of Art and Design, we needed to make a shelter. With a group of three, our budget was limited to $30. We could use any materials. Our idea was to make a shelter with a built in camera obscure. It captures the outside world and reflects it upside down on the inside. It was a lot of work but it was awesome!

  1. How did your group approach the concept of shelter?  Was it successful?
  2. What was the group budget for the project? Where did you source your materials and how did they cost?
  3. Was the workload equal? Explain.
  4. What was the strength that you added to the group, your weakness?
  5. What role did you find you played in the group dynamic?
  6. What advice would you give to the next group that must complete this project?
  •  We had several different ideas to approach the shelter, and the final choice was successful. We agreed to construct our shelter out of card board.
  • The budget for our group was $30. We only spent $15 for the entire process. Luckily we found more than enough cardboard behind the mall. This worked out perfectly because that was our main material. We then spent $10 on tarp and $5 on the table cloth. Tape was also free.
  • The work load was definitely spread evenly. This could not have been successfully done without each others resources, opinions and creative ideas.
  • My strength in the group was asking the logical questions. For example, for every idea I would ask “How would we do that? Have you taken weather (or something else) into consideration”. Another example was mentioning to place and face our shelter towards light to get the full effect of the camera obscura. I also thought of a storing our shelter behind the front desk at Teresa while we were not working on it.  My weakness was most likely time management. Once out of the many times we met I had to leave early because I had another group project meeting.
  • We all held a leadership role. I feel as if I was more practical. As I mentioned before, I made sure all our ideas were within our budget and could be made with our strict time limit and external factors.
  • A piece of advice I would give is ask around before you buy material. A fellow classmate went above and beyond in their shelter and did not spend a single dime. Also, don’t be afraid to be creative! The weirder the better.
