Meet the Next Two St. Edward’s Sustainability Champions: Emily Hartman and Bill Quinn

We’d like to introduce you to our next two Sustainability Champions: Emily Hartman and Bill Quinn! Every two weeks, we will be revealing two more champions, so please visit the page and keep your eyes out in Horizon for the newest pair. Help us give a big thanks to these eco-friendly folks! And let them inspire you to become more sustainable.

Emily Hartman, Biology Laboratory Coordinator: Your decision to walk as much as possible to do errands and visit local restaurants benefits both you and the environment. When you have to drive, your fuel-efficient car helps you stay environmentally friendly behind the wheel. You challenged the stereotype that weddings are wasteful by reusing all of your wedding decorations as décor in your home and in your family’s homes. You also make use of fans in your home so that the thermostat can be set to a higher temperature, thus saving energy. At St. Edward’s, you’re working to implement a recycling program for Styrofoam and you promote the reuse of glassware and plasticware to decrease the number of plastic consumables used, which will all go a long way in helping us make campus a more sustainable place. Keep up the great work, Emily!

Bill Quinn, Professor of Biology and Computer Science: For you, sustainability is a mindset. You stress the importance of both acting as individuals to live more sustainably and being more intent on influencing public policy. You and your wife share one car and you ride your bike to campus as much as possible from the multi-family development that you live in, a housing situation allows for you to reduce your use of water and energy. You believe in being an “unconsumer,” which means you avoid publications, events, and broadcasts that create a perception of need in you. Keep on practicing what you preach, Bill!
