WiP Project Assignment Reflection

From the brainstorming process and comparing interviews, we all realized that this issues isn’t something that can really be fixed. The solutions come from a smaller platform like fundraising and utilizing funds efficiently when provided. Most of the concerns that were raised that seemed to be a common theme throughout everyone’s interview was the about of work and rules applied to the way money is spent in schools.

A lot of our interviews were pulled from actual schools, so either people that work in schools or people that rely on the eduction system, which would be the students and parents. Form these people there was a lot of “they need to” and “if they” but when we actually talked to the “they” that people refer to their only response was “that’s the way it is and we can’t do much about it”. the comparison made it interesting and clearer on the complexity of this issue.

In our meeting we discussed ways in which the issue of funding can be fixed or at least addressed, but with such hopeless interviewees and a complicated system, we too felt discouraged. However, we do believe that lack of funding or the un even distribution of funding is something that needs to be recognized and taken seriously.

WiP Interview

From this interview I have learned that there is a very complicated system in terms of requesting money for school programs, and how there are different budgets for different things. For example there are some budgets are only awarded to schools in low income areas but have strict rules on what the money can actually be spent on. There are also budgets that hold money collected from students that can be spent on whatever. From this I just realized that there are a lot of things that have to be accounted for before a school can actually spend money.

The bookkeeper I interview mentioned that these rules that are constantly making funding and budgeting more complicated is because of people’s mistakes. This made me wonder what kind of mistakes have been made that initiated a district wide change? I do feel like money is a issues that many people can have different view on when it comes to the way it is spent and how that affects the community. This kind of explains the reason why there are so many rules in order to keep every stakeholders value upheld, but at what point does this cause issues in opportunity for students.
