Analog Collages⎪Visual Studies I

I’m super excited for this project!! The photography thing was fun and all, but I’m really excited to be more hands on in actually controlling the way the content of the image is arranged. As someone who cringes at leaving things til the last minute, I planned to go gather my objects Friday morning since I don’t have class until noon. So I went out Friday morning. In the rain. Where I picked up wet trash. In the rain. All to say I found those 10+ objects ASAP. Grab and go. Back at my apartment I pressed everything between sheets of paper towels to dry them. It was quite elaborate. The scanning process went really smoothly. I upped the saturation on the images to make them more dynamic and printed them.

I looked at the Pinterest board to get the creative juices flowing and then went to town cutting the printed images. Getting to 30 cuts was really easy and I ended up doing way more than 30 cuts. For the ketchup packet grid-patterned collage, I drew out a grid in pencil and then centered the cut pieces in the center of each square. I used the paper cement I had left over from the art packet I had to buy when I went to Baylor to adhere the pieces down smoothly. For the stripe-y collage, I initially was going to glue all the stripes down and then cut an amoeba shape out of the pattern created, but I decided it was more impactful to leave it as a textured column. For both collages I laid out the pieces before cementing them down.

Collage #1

This collage relies on the gestalt laws of repetition and pattern to add visual interest – both the grid pattern and the diagonal pattern. The two pieces that say “FIRE!” are backed with green to draw attention to them and to create variety using a complementary color scheme. Without the green, the color scheme would have been monochromatic overall, which while very calming is kinda boring.

Collage #2

The many stripes on the column create texture, which anchors the image as a whole. The analogous color schemes brings unity along with the gestalt law of similarity in the both the amoeba shapes and the circular shapes. The two red stripes at the top and bottom create a framing effect to hem the crazy stripes in.
