SoCo 3/3⎪Visual Studies I

For this third visit to South Congress I broadened/deepened my theme.

To review…
trip 1: colors, lots of colors
trip 2: blue

And now… duh duh duh duhhhh
trip 3: concepts that bring people together, in part, through color

Image 1: Flags are symbols that people gather under. Throughout history, flags are things that people either gather to support and rally under or to dismantle and hate.

Gestalt: By taking the photograph from below the flag, there is a sense of motion created. Because the purple corner of the flag goes out of the frame, this seems to go disagree with the law of containment, but I think it does play to the law of common fate.

Image 2: Hotels are meccas where strangers all gravitate towards for the same purpose – a place to live in a new city. In current events, hotels became makeshift shelters during hurricanes Harvey and Irma as people gathered together to ride out the storms.

Gestalt: This image has a really interesting balance between the negative space of the sky on the left and the large green swath of the plants, which acts as a sort of negative space. The neon light “no vacancy” really grabs the viewer’s eye and then if you look closer, you see the light mirrored in the window.

Image 3: Construction is a constant in Austin. And often times with construction comes detours. Detours force people who wanted to take different routes together in one unified route. So, in a way, detours bring people together towards a path.

Gestalt: Linear perspective creates a sense of common fate between the lines on the street, the metal base of the sign, and the bottom of the black rectangle sign. All the lines angle towards the left suggesting motion.

Image 4: The sign for the Susan G. Komen walk acts as a paradigm for walks/runs in support of any Cause. These gatherings bring people who support a common cause together.

Gestalt: Because the Race for the Cure banner goes completely across the sky it acts as an interesting framing device. Again, the red lights are so saturated in comparison to the rest of the drab colors that they grab the viewer’s eye.

My mom came in town for my birthday, so she and I walked through South Congress. She appears in a few of the pictures on the contact sheets. Hi, Mom. Surprisingly (?) this visit to South Congress seemed more difficult because it seemed like I’d already taken pictures of most of the street. You can only take pictures of stickers or signs so many times before it becomes repetitive.
