Blog Post #8

Art is so interesting in the way it can take you back to the past without any words just pictures and different textures. Fr. Martin Nguyen was a very interesting man, he was from Vietnam and immigrated over to the US in 1979 and he is a priest. He was in the Department of Art, Art History and Design of the University of Notre Dame in 1995. Which I assume is where he really discovered how much he enjoyed painting and did it well. My first impression of the artwork  was that it almost looked like just a bunch of pictures on a wall, but really looking into it I noticed that the faces and paintings really tell a story. The faces by themselves and the expressions on the faces are so intricate, they really tell you a story of what he or she has gone through. All of these faces together tell an even bigger story about the past and what has happened in order to be where we are today. The tones of the faces and colors are so warm, although they were 2D photos the textures created such a different picture than it would’ve if there was no texture in any of the photos. The spacing of the pictures create interesting lines in the painting as a whole and the way the faces were facing some what differemt directions was a nice a detail.

I think what stands out the most in the painting as a whole  is just the different faces, the cultures, the ethnicities and expressions. I also really like how its so many different people in one, instead of two or three faces. Obviously the commonalities are the faces in general and the way that it is all laid out. The faces and the line up are all equally separated to where you can see other lines within the lines. The balance, rhythm, and proportion are perfectly spaced out. The organized ways of this piece connect by the alignment.

I felt that this painting was about the past and trying to show us that others have had it worse but that we should all come together as one to make the world better as a whole. The different facials, hardships and ethnicities have become one within this painting. The artist converting the world and past how they worked together and created we have now. The artwork made me emotional in the way that world could be so much better if everyone worked together and forgot about the physical things but what we can create with whats inside of us. It reminds me of a textbook and all contains but through pictures.

Yes my first impression changed, I thought it was pretty at first and different but then I realized what was really going one in the picture and my view completely changed. It is for sure a successful piece of work, it made many people think twice. It is unique due to the fact that I don’t think many people think to just paint a bunch of faces and put them together. It is for sure a work of art that shows off his talent. Yes I understand the design and the rest of the art with the spacing creates a little less tension between the faces. I think it was well thought out with the spacing and all around art. I don’t think I would buy it considering it is a bunch of faces, but only because thats not my taste. I have learned a different way to collage. This painting inspires me to create an art piece that will inspire everyone to come together and create something incredible. I do think it is a great fit for the category it is in. I like the art he has created it is very interesting and very inspiring for many.

My weakness is not re-reading for tests.

Math:

My greatest strength is getting my homework done and getting my projects done.

My weakness is studying for math, I have a hard time studying for it.

English:

My strengths are my essays.

My weaknesses are again studying for quizzes.

Photography 1:

My strengths are taking the pictures.

My weaknesses are developing film.

Computer skills:

My computer skills include:

Photo editting, Typing, Organizing, Researching and Writing.

I still need to learn:

More EDITTING and ORGANIZING

Research & writing skills:

My greatest strengths as a researcher/writer include:

Searching and being able to collect all my thoughts and write them in an essay.

I need to work on these aspects of research and writing:

I could always learn more researching and essay skills.

I learn best & accomplish most when:

I am actually sitting alone, listening to music paying attention.

The class I struggle most with is Math because I am terrible with numbers and I’ve just never been able to get it. I am going to study more, ask more questions and ask for more help. I will pay closer attention in class, write more notes and make sure to do the examples. I will also go online and do more practices, maybe get more help from students instead of teachers and do more worksheets.

This video really made me think about everything we waste that can be turned into something beautiful. The way he discuses this perfect image we have in our mind is really not something we need or something we can create from nothing. Project two will be a way I am able to “prove” or show something through really nothing, its a way to look at my images and the way I see them. It will allow me to re-create my image and show something I couldn’t the first time around. I feel like the houses he made came from this little thought in his mind to this huge master piece of art from waste. He made me believe that in reality we don’t need much to satisfy our needs, thoughts and make art.

Self Critique – Oct. 5, 2015

Part One IMG_0689IMG_0739

These are two images that were used in my gestalt project for Visual Studies 1, I was supposed to use the principles of gestalt to takes images only using south congress. So what I did was go out and shoot on repetition and proximity.

Part Two

1. I think the strongest aspect of this work was the way the gestalt principles were used.

2. The weakest aspect I believe was just how basic/boring these pictures I took are.

3. It could be improved by looking at the pictures more separately than together.

4.The project again can be strengthened by looking at the pictures as individuals.

5. Technically it can be strengthened by  using the principles and editing skills a bit more.

6. Additional notes: this project helped me be more informed about the pictures I will be taking in the future.

Brandon Maxwell – Photographer, Editor, Stylist and Designer

Brandon Maxwell, started out a sophomore at St. Edwards, now he styles not only Lady Gaga but many other celebrities! Maxwell is now a stylist/ photographer and editor for not only Lady Gaga but many magazines, two including Vogue and Elle, which are two of the most famous magazines available. Maxwell was lucky enough to have that extra push from Lady Gaga and finally made his own spring 2016 fashion line. Maxwell truly inspires considering this is exactly what I want to do and he came from basically the same background as I, he did a great job proving that anything is really possible.

Watching and listening to these three videos made me interpret creativity a little differently. I used to believe that creativity was something you were born with and not something you could learn, but watching the, “Amy Tan Ted” video, made me realize that all creativity has a little bit of a story behind it. Therefore, if you have a story you are able to turn it into creativity. I think that all “creativity” comes from an experience that you turned into a picture, or an sort of art.      Watching, Dan Brackage’s video was extremely interesting considering when the video was made there wasn’t really photoshop, or a lot of digital editing going on so there was a lot of creativity going on having to figure out how to make the video. Which brings me back to Amy Tan, just like Dan Brackage, her creativity came from experiences and other things to create creativity. Now, “Tunnel 57,” was exactly the same in order to create, a lot of other people were involved and even though, I’m sure many ideas were conflicting and so different, they were able to create such music. So back to my first point, again, it takes a lot to be creative and it is definitely something you can learn and don’t have to be born with.

Seminar Visual Studies – 1100

Mykaelah Ortega

The main points of each article are that artists more than just “artists” like people have been known to think. People think that because artists aren’t doctors or something of that sort, they aren’t “important” or its “easy.” When in reality artists are more than just artists, we are business people and entrepreneurs.

Artists can learn how important it is to work with other people and take in other ideas. A couple of other things artists can learn from entrepreneurs would be organization skills and learning there way up.

I do believe that artists are entrepreneurs in many ways, artists create everything from a blank page. Artists have to create their career from the bottom up with their own ideas and creations.

I think the 3 main characteristics I agree with would be three, artists are most definitely craftsmen, creating and inventing new styles of art. Another characteristic would be nine, artists are great storytellers considering every piece of art they invent is telling a story, its the way artists express themselves. Lastly, eleven, I do believe that artists are extremely passionate about their work, artists have to be passionate in order to get to where hey want to be and create their best work.

I think something I would add would be how creative artist are, I don’t think people realize that creativity is a skill and something very difficult to learn. Artists are extremely deep and have to find their creativity within themselves which is one of the hardest things to learn.

Grit is something I believe many people could work on. I know that is something i can work on and keep learning, I think that I need to be more passionate and driven than I am.

I think in order to help with learning grit, I need to practice, practice, and worry a bit more about my future. Think about what it is I really want and do everything I can to get there.

What is Design? – Visual Studies I

Mykaelah Ortega

What is Design? In my opinion, design something you can’t really define considering it can be really anything and everything. The way designing came a long was far long ago but it is something that is used in everyday life. The reason we have these insane machines, without design we wouldn’t be able to create them. Design is something needed for every creation. Design helps one open their eyes to new ideas to help create everything. With design comes perfection and the ability to make sure that everything will work in the end.

Designing is the more creative way to plan. Design is something everyone uses in their life to make sure everything will workout in the end. The way so many people back in the day would use design to live is something everyone needs to think about. Just imagine having to design and create something in order to live, your life and your families lives Design was involved. From back in the day designs have really made a name for themselves. Now we can design clothes, furniture, different things to get around. Our bodies are even designed in many ways to help one get by in life. Design was created for many different things and design is something everyone defines in their own ways.

High Concept, High Touch – Visual Studies

Mykaelah Ortega

“High Concept, High Touch,” reminded me how important creativity is and how with every “major, job, business, etc,.” creativity is a must. Creativity is something  that definitely gets over looked in my opinion but is really one of the most important skills a person can have. If you don’t have creativity how are you going to come up with your own ideas and create something incredible.

I think that artists and creators get over looked because it is not your “typical” job, but just like the text reads MFAs and MBAs are actually going head to head. MFAs in my opinion are the new MBAs, being creative is not a skill that is easily taught, it is a skill that you have to find within yourself. Most businesses now a days hire some sort of creative artist for their advertising, social media and designing, in order to bring attention to the business. Artists definitely need to be taken more seriously and not just seen as “fun” job.
