Blog Post 11 Alumni Presentations

Kaci Beeler-

I thought it was amazing how she was able to have such a wide verity of experiences by just saying yes. I am a shy person but I feel that I should work better as saying yes now so that I won’t regret anything later in life. I also definitely want to go to the Hideout Theater now. Looks like she has put a lot of work into the theater.

Rebecca Marino-

I thought it was amazing that she was in charge of Pump Project Art Complex and is able to interact with so many different types of artist. I personally did not like her personal Website because of the layout and the difficulty I had in operating it. What I did like was how she was seeing the world but also seeing other things at the same time such as the dried up pond and the crater.

Briley Noel Dockery-

On her website I absolutely love the section called Fact and Figures and how she writes what she believes is that persons different likes and dislikes after meeting them for some amount of time. I also love the angels that she takes her photos at so that they are not just your everyday objects but a twist like in wonderland.

Design Alumni-

They were a very funny group and I felt the connection and community that the Alumni’s felt.  They definitely pride themselves on helping other artists in finding jobs or opportunities. Some of the things I took away from the advise they gave use were

-DO INTERNSHIPS

-recycle work because you could use it somewhere else

-start by saying “Hi I like your work”

Blog Post 10 upperclassman Presentations

Matthew Defeo-

I found his work very eye catching and captured the feeling of the person very well. I was in yearbook in high school but I never really liked taking pictures of people because I always felt like I was never able to capture their true feelings unless it was sport (which my teacher never let me do because I was always busy with band). Anyway I love the lighting and the different black and white photo’s mixed with the colors. Brings out different feelings while still being about the same thing.\

Samantha Wright-

I really liked her style of drawing and how it seemed like she was going for her goal even though she did not have a complete plan at the moment. The fact that she is making her own comic to me is very amazing and on top of that she is putting it out there fore the world to see. I highly admire people that take the time to do something that they love and share it with the world.

Justice David Gutierrez-

I loved his website. I was amazed by how little major detail (compared to a movie) it looked like there was but was still so eye catching. I also love his use of colors and continuing sequencing. His videos were also very cool because they were simple but still funny and got the point across Loved it.

Xiaoshou Shu-

I have a lot of respect of him. I once did sculpting and it takes a lot of patients and time. You also have to have this creative pull to do things and make them into 3D objects. Some of the things that he showed looked weird to me and did not looked like they would be ok in a house but I had to take a step away from my personal perspective and look at the big picture.

Blog Post 9 Faculty Presentations

Hollis-

I liked your presentation and all of your works. I thought it was interesting that a lot of your resent work was from a past memory. It was amazing how much you were able to create from this one idea. I personally liked the big wooden tornado’s and how they interacted in the exhibit with the shadows and the others objects.

Sybil-

I thought the idea of mayor portraits was interesting but for me personally I found it rather boring. I did like though how you told us how you had struggles with different places on obtaining the pictures. The elephant video that you showed us was very… interesting. I had watched it before class and I honestly felt horrified of elephants. The use of elephant legs and them being red just made me think of death the whole time. After you explained in class why  you made the video and some of the background history it made more sense and was a little less scary.

Tuan-

As a Graphic Design minor, I found your presentation the most interesting especially since most of the work you showed us was in the process. Personally I feel that being able to see the process is sometimes even better than seeing the ending product because you see how to make things better and how to incorporate grander ideas. I also loved the idea of the rice boxes and how they all connected. It showed a flow between the different kinds while still being individualized.

Blog Post 8 Armin Muhsam Exhibit Review

Armin Muhsam graduated from the Univeristy of Applied Science and Montana State University.  Armin Muhsam’s work in his newest exhibition called “Anthroposcenes” brings out his environmental side.  Almost all of his work was painted on a wood media except for a few of his 3D pieces and his three pieces that look more modern.

The use of the world Anthroposcene as the exhibition starts off the viewer already with this idea of unbalance between human impact and nature. This theme shows in his work by having two figures of the “same ” picture next to each other except one has more focus on the “beauty” of human creation and the other shows in less fancy layers what the real impact is. Muhsam’s use of line connecting the two views together is very clear and really brings the two together. The use of lines is very present in his three “modern” art pieces. These brought forth the feel of technology specifically as human impact. Doing this theme in today’s time where the environment has become an increasing interest of the people is both a very good way to put out ones work but to also let his views on the matter be heard.

Blog Post 6 Skill inventory

My greatest strength in Visual Studies includes my determination to continue a project even if I don’t understand or like it. For greater success in the class I need to have some better self esteem for my work.

My greatest strength in Rhetoric and Composition includes by habit of going over my work 3-4 times before I even think about submitting it. For greater success in the class I need to increase my vocabulary, strengthen my grammar, and work on my sentence structure.

My greatest strength in my Freshman lecture is the fact that I actually read and to the homework for the class. For greater success in the class I need to go over my notes a few more times before class.

My greatest strength in my Visual seminar is the i’m actively listening and am on top of the blog post for the class. For greater success in the class, after the lecture I should go and look up some more information about what we were talking about that day.

My greatest strength in my Intro to Sustainability class in my determination and interest in the course. For greater success in the class I need to study more and get better at typing up debates.

My greatest strength in my Asian traditions class is my interest in the culture and my habit to ask random and yet useful questions. For greater success in the class I need to study more and review tons before a test/quiz.

My computer skills include word, Excell, Powerpoint,  Adobe Illustrate, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge. I still need to learn more about each of the programs and all the short cuts to make work faster.

My greatest strength as a researcher and writer is  my determination to find the best sources and to read and reread everything until I am positive that it is what I want. I need to work on my writing skills overall though. I am very weak in writing as far a sentence structures, grammar, tone, and word diction. Things that make a good paper respectable among peers.

I learn best and accomplish most when I am alone with headphones in my ears(music or not) and am aware of the time limit that I have to motivate me.

ACTION PLAN: RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION

  1. Do the readings in the books about how to do citations and sentences structure.
  2. Go back and learn the basics. What a noun, verb, adverb is and be able to identify them.
  3. Read more books.
  4. Find a writing style that works for me.
  5. When writing papers, try to find better diction to incorporate.
  6. Have different people look over my work and have them comment on it.
  7. Continue to visit the professor about questions and ways to help.
  8. research what I am writing about more than is necessary to get a better angle on the paper.
  9. Work hard, even when it doesn’t seem like anything is going to come out of it.
  10. Read, Reread, and reread again until I can find absolutely no mistakes and then reread it again!

This is a picture of my 3D and 2D parts for my visual studies collages that we have to make for class . This project needs work because I have a lot of the different pieces cut out but I don’t have them assembled and not positive as to where I want to put them. I honestly need to just sit down and play with the different pieces to see what I can create.

Research Blog Post- Floris Van Breugel

I love these pictures taken by Floris Van Breugel. I love how he makes nature almost look like a magical land that tells a story all on its own. Van Breugel is a doctor at the University of Washington with a B.S. in Biological and Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D in Control and Dynamial Systems. Although Van Breugel does not have a degree in photography, he sees it as a big part of his life. His style of photography is effected by his different hobbies of painting, guitar, and engineering. I’m amazed at how Van Breugel is able to capture nature that we know is real but almost feels like a moment from a dream. His work appeals to be personally because I love natural beauty that people see everyday but don’t take in and Van Breugel definitely sees that beauty.  http://www.artinnaturephotography.com/
