ARTS1311 Reading #1

1. What is the purpose of a designer, do they always work for a stakeholder? A designer is someone who can create something that serves to be aesthetically pleasing as well as practically functional. Designs can be made for something when the designer is inspired, but to make money there must be a client.
2. Is the artist always a self-expressive narcissist? Not always. There are some that see that an eye for art isn’t something that only “artists” have. Art can join with any other type of work, such as how a good design requires functionality and a sort of beauty to it. Artists do not always have to have self-expressive, and can still see the beauty in other types of objects.
3. Can the designer/artist exist? It is difficult. While the artist has the freedom of self-expression to do what they like to their piece, designers are constrained to functionality as well as what the client wants for the final product. However, the two do go hand in hand when it comes to the aesthetic appreciation for how the design of an object looks.

1. What is your personal view of the difference between the designer and the artist? I see a designer as someone who can create something that will be a functional and usable object, while also making it visually pleasing to people. I see an artist as someone who creates, not only for themselves in their form of self-expression, but also for the enjoyment of others.
2. Which are you, why? It is difficult to say. I would not say I’m a designer, but I would not say that i’m much of a self-expressive artist either. My artwork is usually in reference to something that exists already and does not serve a functional purpose, but also is not a product of my imagination.
