Course Design Review Standards with Annotations: Assessment and Feedback

Instructional Technology has developed Course Design Review Standards (CDRS) to be used in the development of online and blended courses at St. Edward’s University. These standards are based on best practices in course design and rubrics developed by the Online Learning Consortium and the Open SUNY Course Quality Review. Assessment & Feedback

Standard 33: Course provides assignments for students to develop higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills, such as critical reflection and analysis where appropriate.

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric  Standard 30.


Standard 34: Course provides assignments that emulate real world applications of the discipline, such as experiential learning, case studies, and problem-based activities.

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric  Standard 31.


Standard 35: Course grading policies, including plus/minus grading and consequences of late submissions, are clearly stated in the syllabus.

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric Standard 44.


Standard 36: Course includes opportunities for students to review their performance and assess their own learning throughout the course (pre-tests, automated self-tests, reflective assignments, etc.)

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric Standard 47.


Standard 37: All assignments have clear instructions and major assignments include grading rubrics for learners, as appropriate.

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric Standard 46.


Standard 38: Students are informed when a timed response is required. Proper lead time is provided to ensure there is an opportunity to prepare an accommodation.

This standard is based on the Open Suny Course Quality Review Rubric Standard 48.


Standard 39: All graded assessments have due dates.

Learners should have clear due dates for every assignment.
