“What Quantities of Space can Our Eyes Hope to Take in Between Our Birth and Death”

For this project we were each given a quote. First, we were assigned to create a Pinterest board and collect 8 to 10 images that reflect our quote in some way and are all correlated in some way. All the images I collected had one thing in common, a distinct line in the middle, many of which were made by light. For me, the lines in each picture represent the time in between our birth and death. We never know how long it will be, or wide, but all of us are given some particular time on this earth. The pictures also represent things maybe no always noticed in life but when they are seen are all beautiful in individual ways.

The second part of the assignment was to take a series of pictures that tell some sort of story connecting to your quote. The story could be as elaborate and weird as you wanted. My story was about a girl who lived in the forest with animals her whole life and always heard from the animals about another civilization outside of the forest but never really believed it. Until one day she set out on adventure, to find something new. She succeeded and found the city life. It took her a long time to adjust to this new way of life and she was constantly learning about new things every day. Her curiosity never died.

I think this assignment was given in order for us to learn how to interpret abstract text into images. It provided me with a stronger understanding of how to turn text into something concrete and to make in more understandable for a broader audience. It was difficult because the text was so abstract. One thing I learned from this assignment was that everyone (everyone!) interprets things differently, and as designers it’s our job to create work that creates a universal understanding to whatever it may be that we are interpreting into a visual element.
