This was the first major project we were assigned in Advanced Typography. Prior to this project, I wasn’t very proficient using AfterEffects to say the least. I had one assignment previously in Image Methodology that introduced me to the program, but besides that I was very unfamiliar with AfterEffects and viewed this weather assignment as a challenge.
To begin this assignment I started in illustrator, designing the individual cities logos, choosing an appropriate font, and designed the icons for each type of weather. The basis of the project was to incorporate three out of the five latches we were taught in class into a weather forecast designated for the future. Out of the five latches I chose to utilize location, category, and time. I used them in that order.
My design was centered around the idea that the forecast was being viewed on an app. At the beginning of the video the viewer is selecting the weather app, their top locations viewed are selected, and the forecast for the following weekend was to be displayed. I think that my designs were very strong, although there are some things I know I could still improve as far as my overall composition goes. These things include incorporating my data throughout the entire video (one of the primary requirements given for the assignment), doing a voice over to select the top cities, and taking out the ending close of the app. Although there are a few things I know I can improve I really saw myself advance in my skill as a direct effect from this project. Overall this assignment was extremely challenging but I learned a lot from it. The project allowed me to become much more confident with my use in the AfterEffects program.
