Franz Kline

Dimitri Kozyrev. Painting II. Spring 2016.

In this course, our projects were divided into 4 time periods in art history.

  1. Pronto-Renaissance
  2. Renaissance
  3. Modernism/Impressionism
  4. Abstract Expressionism

My favorite of all was the Abstract Expressionist painting. Before starting any of our paintings we were to do some reading and research over the art movement. We were also then required to choose an artist to look further into. I chose Franz Kline. I was drawn to Franz Kline because of his large scale black and white gestural paintings. After more research I found an image that really caught my attention.

Here, you see a microscopic flake from one of his paintings. This blew me away and made me want to really work on creating layers for this painting.

I also worked on creating a rich heavy texture by adding a molding paste. The paste had to be placed strategically in the places that would require color on top as forms, otherwise the texture would not make sense. image                                                      image

The image that I wanted to try and “recreate” for this project was the following which I was not able to find a name for.

I wanted to use this piece but also incorporate what caught my attention about Kline, his bold, fast, black lines.
