Faculty Spotlight

At St. Edward’s University, we have many brilliant and dedicated faculty who are deeply committed to the issues around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Friends and colleagues have worked tirelessly for years and it is time that we start celebrating their collective efforts by spotlighting individual’s work each year.

The  Champion Award for Diversity for the 2016-2017 academic year was awarded to Dr. Amy Nathan Wright. In her work, Dr. Wright’s commitment to Diversity exemplifies the Holy Cross tradition, our university mission, and Fr. Moreau’s challenge to teach students with the most need. In her application, Dr. Wright stated “Diversity and social justice inform everything I do” and upon review of her work, we have concluded that this is no exaggeration.

In her American Studies course, Dr. Wright challenges her students to reflect on how race, class, gender, and sexual orientation were historically and socially constructed at different points in U.S. history. Her scholarship and teaching center on the ways people resist identity-based oppression, primarily through analysis of popular culture and social movements. Specifically, she is completing a book on the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, a national, multiracial anti-poverty movement inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King. She has served as the faculty advisor for the African Students Organization, the faculty co-advisor for the Black Student Alliance, she has created the Social Justice Film Series, and served on the Faculty Committee on Diversity and Inclusion.

For all of her work in the area of Diversity, we are proud to announce that the 2017 Champion Award for Diversity goes to Dr. Amy Nathan Wright. Please help us in congratulating Amy when you see her on campus!
