Today I will be talking about two articles called Academic and Community studies and Trouble in Luxor: My Experience Getting Harassed in Egypt. These two articles depict the situation in Egypt with women. They are currently experiencing sexual harassment which many have said that it is related to women staying repressed. The Academic and Community studies talk about how in Egypt the rates in sexual harassment have stayed high due to the stigma that women are responsible for what happens to them. The current situation has led many women to cover themselves so that they won’t be harassed. Even though they have taken the extreme measures of being fully clothed in the Egyptian heat, the harassment hasn’t seized. Liz in her blog, Trouble in Luxor: My Experience Getting Harassed in Egypt, talks about her own experience in Egypt when she went site seeing. The harassment that she experienced she says had little to do with how she was dressed since she was covered from her shoulders to her knees. She mentions that although she knew that the people wanted her attention to buy things, she didn’t understand why they started harassing her when she didn’t buy certain services or materials. In her vacation she says that the harassment was on a daily basis and she certainly got tired of it and even threw insults back. These two articles do a good job in talking about the current situation. They certainly show how the situation has not declined. The article Egypt’s Sexual Harassment Law: An Insufficient Measure to End Sexual Violence, says that all the attention to sexual harassment has led to the passing of laws but that there are still many problems. With the movement of women trying to get rights, we can see that certain acts do keep these women repressed. The acts of violence and sexual harassment are two great examples. They make these women feel like they are valued less and even law enforcement undermine their rights. The undermining of their importance has led to many going free to acts that are not letting women be free individuals. The women are being held back from exploring the streets, and using their rights when they have been abused or harassed. Even the law enforcement are exploiting the law because they don’t seek to get the women the rights they deserve. Researchers have been saying that the fact that these women are dressed improperly or doing certain things are not the problem; the problem is that they are women. Women are being targeted whether they are from the area or foreign women. It has even been shown that women from foreign nations are more likely to be targeted. Even though it is usually foreign females, the Egyptian women are also constantly harassed with 99.3% having experienced it before.
