Blog Post #3

I have kept up with Phil Noto’s artwork for almost a year now after finding him through reading X-Men comics and his work still amazes me. Besides being a comic artist, Noto also has had several shows at the Stranger Factory. The following images are some of my favorite that I came across on his tumblr blog. As you can probably tell from the images I chose, Noto’s main subject is women or people. What draws me to these images is the graphic and photo-like nature of them. Noto composes his artwork to appear to be like a photo or an ad and he achieves this appearance through perception and the position of the woman on the substrate. As in the first image, the woman is in focus while the background is out of focus and blurry. This image looks like a page in a fashion magazine and the highlights on the face make the woman look realistic and photographed. The rest of the images follow the same guidelines. The added text also helps to create the feeling of looking at an ad or photo. His realistic but cartoony style is something that I really like and his faces convey a lot of emotion. His colors seem to be placed effortlessly and simply, which is something I would like to achieve. Overall his work is something I deeply admire.
