20 Drawing | 20 Hours

Final drawing project is a big project. Students are asked to research a series of artists that create processed based work. Students are also asked a series of questions and encouraged to experiment with materials. Experimentation is further supported when students are asked to bring all their drawing materials to class. The students are given directions based upon a Sol LeWitt drawing to make the first marks on their paper. They are given subsequent directions to limit a color palette, cover up elements of the drawing, use a projector to trace another drawing on top of the experimental one. This experience helps students negotiate their own ideas and rules for the final project.

Most students alter a rule or two after the first two or three of the final drawings are made. A few students are encouraged to clarify and simplify their rules. What the students learn is that within the limits they set for themselves they find flexibility and creativity in completing the 20 drawings. The drawings then become a suite, a body of work around a common theme. For many students this is the first time they have ever made 20 drawings about the same idea and this is the first body of work they have ever made that is significant.
