VISU1311 Project #1: Amy_Tondre

For my project I decided to focus on the two motels, San Jose and Austin, and the plant life and structures that bring these motels to life. My goal was to group the pictures in a way that had continuity. The first three pictures are of the San Jose, but they then transition to the Austin Motel where you are guided up the driveway, to the door, and then up the staircase. The Gestalt principles that are most prevalent in my images are containment, continuity, and proximity. The two images of the windows both display containment and have a sort of tension between the hedge and the straightened structure of the window frames. The second window image has the fauna overpowering the frame and morphs the window into a new shape, while the first window looks as if it was stamped into the hedge. The third image also shows containment with the roofline containing the cloudy sky causing the building to be overpowering and seem bigger than in actuality. Proximity also plays  a role in this image with the top of the building appearing as farther away and the hedge growing on it appearing closer, distorting the building. The fourth image has a strong sense of continuity. The yellow arrow and the curvature of the black asphalt dominate the image and cause the eye to follow the driveway to the top of the image towards the motel rooms. The asphalt also cuts through the middle of the image demanding the observers attention thus drawing the eye even more so. The fifth image has containment with the white arch framing the image and the doorway. There is also proximity that makes the doorway appear farther away than the arch and gives the image more depth and different layers. The sixth image has continuity. The staircase ascends drawing the eye upwards to the lone doorway at the top. Here are my screenshots.
