Poverty

There are so many factors that come into play when talking about poverty. I believe that all of the issues really stem from income. In this world, you cannot really get anywhere if you don’t have money. That is why we have an economy. And historically this goes all the way back to our origins. When people started trading, that put the roots of what our economy is today. We don’t know any other way to do things though. It’s not necessarily a bad things, but I think recent economic issues have affected how easy or difficult it is for a family to make it on a minimum wage income. Education also factors into a person’s income. When my parents were growing up, it was not a big deal if you did not go to college; you could get a job with just a high school education. But after starting a family, both my parents saw that this was not the case anymore. It was essential for me to go to college and get at least four years of higher education to have a successful future.  Now that I am in college, it seems like a Bachelors is not enough anymore; employers are looking for people who have their masters and they are willing to pay more if you have this kind of education. Overall, I think there are a variety of things that affect why people can end up in poverty. It is really hard to avoid, but not impossible. What makes this a wicked problem is that there is not a way to get rid of poverty 100%. There are too many people and not enough that want to help. We also just do not have all the money to help these people. We would have to change all the laws and money mean nothing to get rid of this, but that is impossible. But I do think we can try to help these people out who are willing to ask for it.

  1. Great visual. As you explore poverty in more detail, consider ways that you could add new lines and connections between the important themes you have already identified…
