The final project was incredibly frustrated because It took me a while to figure out what the relationship between the layers was. I think the most valuable thing for me that i got from the project was learning the importance of critiques.  Getting other pople’s perspetives that aren’t as close to the piece as you are.

The most important thing that I learned from this project is understanding the relationship between the backfround and the subject. I never really thought about the background and how much effect it has on how the subject views the piece.  I also learned to not be afraid to make a mistake. I usually think everthing has to go perfect and I have to plan things out but from this project where I had to just start drawing the same thing over itself many times and then fix it, I felt a lot less pressured while drawing.

Extra Credit Post #1

Out of all of the faculty presentations my favorite was Jimmy van Luu’s. Out of the work that he previewed my top two favorites were The Man on the Ninth Letter vol. 7 no. 2 and vol. 8 no. 1. He mentioned in his presentation that wanted to reimagine the book, he aimed to question the nature of the book itself. Also fieldwork (a catalog for a museum) was really interesting because he had a book within a book and had images that would match up with each other challenging the reader to think outside of the box.

I really enjoyed the simplicity of his work with very clean lines but his work was at the same time complex when it forced the reader to turn the book sideways with text in different directions or books within books. Images turning and out of order.

At the end everyone was talking about pet peeves and he began talking about how annoying it is when someone says “I’m not creative right now”, he said that creativity does not strike like a lightning bolt; being an artist is hard and a 24 hr job.

Semester Reflection

I enjoyed this course mostly… although sometimes it made me have mini panic attacks when I realized how little I had planned for my future. It’s terrifying seeing people that have a lot figured out but then I calmed down when they explained that before they had no idea where they were headed and maybe still don’t. Other than that I really enjoyed having outside parties show us their work so we could appreciate art from all areas and techniques. (this is why i’m excited for our final presentation because I get to see peer’s work, and not just form artists that have been doing this longer than any of us).

Other than that I also really enjoyed the course because it was a time to wind down and reflect on personal work when I was stressing over all my other school responsibilities or work.

Faculty Presentations

It was very exciting to get to see all of the faculty’s work and hearing the story behind it. It’s one thing just going to an exhibit and looking at the art; you interpret it in your own way and it’s a whole other experience than when you actually listen to the history behind each piece. Listening to the artist speak about the process of their work and how their technique has changed over the years is very interesting.

Bill Kennedy’s work was very unique and surprising. I had no idea what the process of his work was and listening him explain how he altered images on photoshop (which is a very time consuming process) changed the images themselves completely. It all transformed into a narrative. My favorite piece out of all of the ones he presented was Demons. It was very engaging and unique.

Hollis Hammonds work is probably one of my favorite. Her drawings are very detailed and they contain all these hidden common objects that when they’re all put together they create this chaotic yet organized feeling. I also really admire that she is able to draw these “disasters” and then transform this idea to a 3D installation. It’s kind of like watching her drawings come alive.

I admire Tammie Rubin’s work very much. I don’t really work with ceramic or sculpture very much because it takes a lot of patience and delicate skill… I get frustrated with it very easily and watching all the detail in her pieces was incredible. Not to mention they bring forth a very heavy subject in a beautiful way.

5 YEAR PLAN…

To be completely honest I have no idea where I want to be in 5 years… which trust me, terrifies me but also makes me excited because I know that there are a lot of opportunities out there that I can get to if I really set my mind on it. I hope that I can go into the film industry somewhere down the line and bring light to a lot of animal cruelty going on in the world that people don’t acknowledge, especially with marine species.

Internships

Overall Internships are so crucial because they allow the student to fully submerge oneself in the area they are interested in as a profesional individual. It’s a hands on experience that provides the necessary experience to really understand said area. I found several internships that could apply to areas that I am interested in: Animation and Graphic Design. Here is a short list of links for them:

My Future

Honestly when it comes to my career I don’t have much planned at all… which is terrifying but also exciting because I still have so many choices to pick from. I know that the near future is more planned out because I have things I want to do after college, but they do not include any jobs…

If I could travel abroad I would probably visit more of Europe or Australia. Europe has so much Artistic Culture that just walking around the streets makes me nostalgic. Australia seems like a very exciting place when it comes to exploring the outdoors. I know that I want to involve nature and animals in my career so this would be an exciting place to experiment with.

No I am not a part of a student group. (Except for rowing? not sure if that counts).

Alumni Presentation

Out of all the alumni presentations, Camille Dollins was my favorite one. Her whole experience with Lucine box helped me put into perspective what a future project could and would look like. It makes things seem (this may sound cheesy) real and possible. You see all the products out there and don’t really think about the work the artist or designer put into it and it just seems like a goal that you can’t really reach. But she proved otherwise, she was a student that used her school project and turned it into something greater.

Something that she said that really stuck with me was you can’t create a product that is supposed to help people take care of themselves if you can’t really take care of yourself. You have to be 100% healthy in order to be able to fairly create an authentic product. It wouldn’t be fair to the customers if she was still creating Lucine while she was struggling to get her health back. Advice-wise I guess you could say to put yourself first sometimes, focus on your physical and mental health too and don’t get carried away with what you’re creating.

Action Plan

My greatest strengths in Drawing 1 include: being able to get work done quickly and on time.

For greater success in this course, I need to: practice more outside of class and step out of my comfort zones.

My greatest strengths in Computer Science include: the ability to solve an issue quickly, even if I don’t know much about programming.

For greater Success in this course, I need to: practice more and do more research out of class.

My greatest strengths in Black Freedom Suffrage include: participating in class often. I don’t really talk in my other classes and this one forces me to open up.

For greater Success in this course, I need to: Keep up with the readings.

My greatest strengths in Rhetoric and Composition II include: coming up with creative topics.

For greater Success in this course, I need to: stay up to date with the readings.

My greatest strengths in Art History include: taking meticulous notes and making a study guide I’m very proud of… and will probably never throw away.

For greater Success in this course, I need to: stay on top of my readings, and possibly annotate them.

Computer skills:

  1. My computer skills include: photoshop, Lightroom, animate and many adobe applications, video editing software, and other basic applications (mostly for school work).
  2. I still need to learn: More specific skills within photoshop and animate.

Research & writing skills:

  1. My greatest strengths as a researcher/writer include: being able to think outside the box and presenting creative ideas.
  2. I need to work on these aspects of research and writing: staying organized, being confident in my work.
  3. I learn best & accomplish most when: I get a solid night’s sleep.

ACTION PLAN

I’m not doing as well as I want to in Art History, so I need to:

-Pay attention in class (not that I don’t), but try and 100% focus on what the professor is saying and stop doodling.

-Read and annotate

-Make a study guide for every chapter the day that it is assigned so that I don’t have to make a huge study guide right before the exam.

-When studying, talk about the content with another person. I learn better in conversation.

– Make a time line

-Meet with the professor to go over content. I tend to slack on one-on-one meetings.

-draw along with my notes; I’m also a visual learner and drawing out things will help me remember them.

-When studying, don’t have Netflix open in the background…

Classwork Projects

The project that was assigned was intervention of images. We learned about photoshop and how to properly alter an image. I didn’t alter the following photograph but more so added some to it. I wanted to represent the relationship between Human and Nature.

What I find to be the strongest attribute of the piece is the use of the strong color contrasting with the black and white to draw emphasis to a certain idea or feeling. As the creator of the piece it is very easy to find things that I did wrong and should improve, like the drawing of the skeleton and the way that I should have omitted some parts to indicate 3 dimensional space. Not to mention also the darkness of some parts is overwhelming and if edited could create a more balanced image.

The goal of this assignment was to stay in one location in Austin and photograph one thing in particular. I decided to represent the passing of time. This one picture that was a part of a larger collection was one of my favorites because I incorporated another medium to the piece and was able to add a little more personality to the picture.

To accomplish the goal of the assignment I not only focused on everything that was moving on South Congress Ave but I also moved as I took a picture; I would sit on my longboard and let myself drift down the road as I took pictures of what passed me.
