A Photographic Solution (essay and image)

1. My Bloody Valentine – Soon

This video starts being very interesting, as the quality is different than others. It sort of resembles some of the movements of people dancing, since it overlays two videos at the same time. Also, it makes it seem as if time is passing by. The blue and red ink that appears sometimes are the only colors beside white and black, which makes it stand out a lot as in contrasts with the lack of color the whole video has. As a result, the lack of color gives the people an eerie look. For example, at exactly 3 minutes the camera focuses on the face of a woman, while the blue shadow of another woman dancing in the background gives it an interesting look. However, despite how cool the whole video is, in my opinion, it gets a little repetitive and somewhat boring once the effect is over.

2. Cocteau Twins – Lorelei

Unlike the last video, this one looks posterized. Personally, this video looks creepier than the last one, since the highlights are really intense, and so is the contrast. Thus, it makes the faces of people look washed out, but at the same time enhancing the eyes, nose, and mouth. Because of the way this video was shot or edited, it’s really hard to distinguish the images unless you’re paying close attention. For instance, from 2:48-2:56 the image is unclear until the camera focuses on a man. It also feels as if the video follows the rhythm of the music. Also, to me the whole video makes me feel uneasy especially during minute 2:30 where the camera zooms out of two little girls in white dresses.

3. Lush – DeLuxe

This video is similar to the first one because it overlays different videos on top of each other. For example, from 0:45-0:55 the video casts a light on a girl’s face, while the rest of her face has a shadow. Thus, it creates an interesting illusion since the light on the girl’s face keeps changing, from stars to stripes and circles. I enjoyed how the flames show in the beginning kept appearing throughout the whole video. It gave the singer (who is also playing the guitar) this badass feel. From 2:00-2:10 the lights reflected on people’s faces appear again, casting light in the form of circles (which reminded me a lot of the circle book). I also enjoy how through the video they kept using the color red and blue, especially because of the singer’s hair is red. And it also resembles the image of when the girl is possibly underwater in 0:18, where the only colors you mainly see are blue (water), red (her hair), and white. The ending of the video makes me wonder if the singer was submerged in water or if it was another liquid because it looks weird. Overall, the whole video looks weird yet interesting at the same time.
