Enrolling your children in sports already has so many benefits, but we recognize that sports can be very expensive to get started. No worries though, we have listed a couple of recommendations for cost-effective beginner sports that won’t break the bank!

Running/ Track

Track is a very simple one. All you need is a track and some running shoes. Starter running shoes and spikes can cost anywhere from $30-$130 and you can find registration and club fees that can be as low as $100! For a starter sport $200 is a fairly decent price and is one of the few sports that doesn’t require a lot of money to get better. All you need is a track which you can find at your local middle school, high school, or even an open college campus like St. Edward’s University! This sport is a great way to get active and also help build endurance and strength!

Swimming

Another affordable sport is swimming! Swimsuits and goggles cost around $30 and joining a club or team can cost as low as $100. Swimming is a great sport for little ones and it’s also a really fun activity for the summer to prepare you for fun pool/beach parties. Swimming is not only a fun sport but it is also a very important skill. All you need is access to a swimming pool or any body of water and a trusted, educated adult to learn this fun skill. If you live in a warm climate or if your child enjoys spending time near water consider putting them into swimming!

Basketball

The last sport is basketball. Decent shoes can be anywhere from $30-$100 and a basic basketball will cost around $8-$30 dollars. Signing up for a league will be as low as $100-$150 dollars as well. This may be a little more expensive, but with good finds for equipment it definitely can be affordable for a little one who is just starting off. This sport is also perfect because all you need is access to a basketball court which in many cases is free if you go to a local neighborhood, middle school, or high school. Basketball is a great way to work on endurance and hand eye coordination, and it will also give your child an opportunity to work with other kids. Not only will this sport help physically and mentally for your child, but they also get the opportunity to build social skills and learn how to work well with others to reach a common goal. If you’re thinking of putting your child in a sport and want them to gain more social and teamwork skills I would highly recommend basketball!

Finding an affordable sport that your child enjoys can be challenging at times. As kids get older the sports only get more expensive and this can be a challenging. I hope that this helped navigate some of the cost barriers for putting your child in sports.
