Nonprofits Supporting Women in Sports

Our mission at Women’s Sports Society is to provide information and resources about women’s sports for young women and their caregivers. Naturally, the best way to do this is to show you amazing nonprofit organizations that are putting hard work and dedication into women’s sports. In honor of National Women in Sports Day, we are highlighting amazing organizations that help further our mission and support young girls’ aspirations in sports.

Play Like A Girl

Play Like A Girl is a nonprofit organization with a mission to level the playing field by leveraging the skills girls gain from sports to propel young women into competitive, male-dominated careers in STEM+. This organization highlights the skills young women gain from sports and helps them gain a competitive edge in the academic world. Although this organization was founded in 2004, it has already done so much in the sports community for women. This year alone 1,563 women have joined this organization and 82% of all girls in this community have reported they intend to pursue STEM. This organization is a great advocate for women playing sports and shows every day that women who play can pursue bigger and better careers in STEM and the world of sports.

Women’s Sport Foundation exist to unlock the possibilities in every girl and woman through the power of sport. Not only do the fight for women to get involved in sports, but they also provide resources, curriculum, and discussion guides to keep women in sports. This foundation was founded in 1974 by a women’s tennis player named Billy Jean King in San Fransisco. Her vision at the time was to create new inroads for all genders inside and outside of sports. Fast forward to modern day and the Women’s Sport Foundation has created internship programs, ground breaking research reports, and the Equity Project when aims to close the gaps in equitable access for women in sports.

Another amazing nonprofit organization is Play It Forward Sport founded by Digit Murphy and Aronda Kirby to advance gender equity in sports at all levels. They aim to create more opportunities for professional athletes, managers, and leaders in the sport professions. Not only do they focuses on older women, but they also recognizing the importance of teaching young girls the power of being a female athlete. They are currently working on creating educational programs to help kids understand the hard work it takes to create opportunity. Through other programs Play It Forward Sports partners with they are bringing kids to college campuses and allowing them to interact with NCAA Scholar Athletes. This organization works to influence women of all ages to pursue their dreams in sports no matter what level in life they’re at.
