So You Decided to Elope

Weddings have been canceled for months and a new report out today says that planning your big day for 2022 is the responsible thing to do. Well, not everyone wants to wait until 2022 to get married, and not everyone wants to get married at the courthouse or in their apartment. As the popular saying goes, ” when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible (When Harry Met Sally).” So start your married life as soon as possible. You don’t have to wait until 2022. You can have a wedding in your favorite place with those important to you by eloping.

Yes, eloping. You still get to wear your wedding dress and look like a knockout all while being safe and following CDC guidelines with your 10 special guests. Elopements are a way to focus on the couple and have this day be entirely about your love for one another. With an elopement, you get your wedding and romantic honeymoon all in one on your terms. You can forego the headache of trying to please everyone and just do what you and your future husband want. How great is that?! It’s pretty awesome.

Keep Calm-o-Matic

I came across a great tool to help with your elopement planning. Simply Eloped is a great site that walks you through the elopement process with vendors already picked in your very own vendors list by location. I would recommend you start by picking a destination you’re interested in and seeing the options they have before you hit “Start Planning” to see if they are a good fit. Once you’ve selected your destination, you’re taken to a page with the different packages; Seed, Sprout, Bloom, and Oasis, with each package providing different experiences ranging from the least to most expensive. The site also includes Add On options to add to your package like flowers, hair and makeup, more photography hours, an engagement shoot, and a day of coordinator at extra cost. You are then given the list of venues Simply Eloped works with followed by a gallery of images and finally the team of vendors for your destination, all without giving away your information. If Simply Eloped has the destination and venue you’re interested in, you can then reach out to them via chat or click start planning.

Not every elopement venue for your destination is included on Simply Eloped. If you have a specific venue you’re interested in and want to plan everything from scratch, Google is your best friend. Many elopement venues have vendors they work with and pre-planned packages to choose from so even going about it yourself is a breeze. Before you start planning, check out this article by Tory Ward from Simply Eloped on 4 Tips You Should know when eloping with family. In the article Tory recommends less than 50 guests, but in the current climate, let’s keep it at a maximum of 10 guests for safety reasons. Please make sure to remind your guests to get tested before attending your elopement ceremony. It’s is better to be safe than sorry!

DIY Apartment Weddings

We all know Beyoncé is a trendsetter and has been doing so since she came on the scene with Destiny’s Child. Well, it seems she was setting wedding trends before we even knew it with her ultra-private 2008 nuptials to Jay-Z in their Tribeca penthouse. With the worldwide pandemic still ongoing, many weddings have been canceled indefinitely, but some couples have decided they no longer want to wait to get married. To save on costs and for safety reasons, couples are taking a cue and hosting intimate DIY apartment weddings with their closest family and friends in attendance. Here’s how to plan you very own DIY apartment wedding in your very own apartment;

Dress
After you and your groom have decided when to have your wedding, start looking for your dress if you don’t have one. There are a lot of bridal boutiques now open for you to find the dress of your dreams. If you prefer to get a custom dress, give yourself plenty of time for the designer to create and alter your dress before your big day. If you’re a risk-taker and want to order your dress online, check out CocoMelody for affordable dress options with a Free Home Try-On at $25 per dress for that boutique experience in the safety of your home. They also carry an assortment of bridesmaids dresses categorized by color and formal dresses for the mothers making it a one-stop-shop for all your bridal needs.

Set Up Wedding Registry
If you choose, set up a wedding registry at your favorite store, or if you prefer have your guests make a charitable donation in your name. Whichever you decide, make sure to include the necessary information on your invitations.

Invitations
Once you’ve figured out the dress situation and set up up your registry, now you can let your closest family and friends know about your special day. Send out your invites at least a month in advance to give your guests time to get tested, book a flight, and find their outfits. Canva has amazing templates to create simple wedding invitations or to create custom masterpieces. You can order quality cards with your choice of paper and coating along with envelopes directly from their website for less than $20 for 10 invitations.

Decor
The idea for this blog came from a video I watched on YouTube where the bride, Ahn Lin, DIYs her apartment wedding. Her decor ideas are simple yet inexpensive and very creative. When it comes to DIY decor craft stores, thrift shops, and plants are your best friend. If you have the budget, add some fresh inexpensive flowers that are available all year round like baby’s breath.

To add something extra to the ceremony space, rent or build a wooden backdrop and decorate it with drapery, garland, and flowers to complete the look.

For the reception area, keep it simple with a long greenery garland on the main table with some baby’s breath tucked in and a scattering of candles.

Food
Every wedding needs food because why else would guests show up? You can choose to cater from your local favorite restaurant as a way to give back to them for all the hard work they do or you can make your favorite foods yourself. Even better is having your friends and family select a dish off a preplanned menu and bring it so you don’t have to worry about having to cook or spend hours before your day in the kitchen. Make sure your menu is relatively simple to keep the cost down or you can even choose to do charcuterie boards. If you choose to do catering, please remove the food from the aluminum trays and put them into platters, it makes for better presentation and pictures. Even better, use food as decoration for your table like the one below.

Cake or Desserts
Last but definitely not least is the wedding cake or desserts. Not everyone likes cake, I am one of those people, but if you do then a simple DIY naked cake will do. You can forego cake and have a tower of cupcakes or your favorite cannolis made from scratch from the local bakery.
