Sophomore Portfolio Review

Image Methodology: Critical Mass

For this assignment, I believe I displayed my ability to use what I’ve learned with a software and applied it effectively. I spent over 40 hours trying to teach myself the concept of using multiple compositions to simplify, importing in illustrator files, incorporating sounds and using Ps to scan and create my images. This was a long and daunting assignment from the creation of the story boards to the final touches in the video.

I think my strengths would be the originality and use of programs to create my video. I definitely need to improve on my Ae skills, there are some evident glitches and timing errors in the video that I feel could be prevented with more practice. I’ve learned from this assignment that hard work leads to the completion of a project you can be proud of and planning a layout of what your goal is helps aid in the process of creating a successful video.

Personal Geography: Cognitive Map

Cognitive Map

For this project, I feel as if I effectively used color, imagery and typefaces together to create an easy to understand “map”. I did my assignment a little differently than others, instead of creating an actual choice map, I thought about how I make decisions and tried to convey it through my work. The map is more like a chart that shows my important need-to-have qualities on a phone and how they compare to other phones. I really liked my personal touch on this map since I took some creative liberties on creating “categories” and depicting them for the audience. I feel as though they are very simple to understand which was exactly what I was going for. Of course, there is always need for improvement and I feel as though I may need to work on choosing more appropriate type faces.

This assignment I didn’t do as many iterations but instead created a chart to round up ideas for the map. I learned that there are many different ways, depending on the assignment, to brainstorm and develop ideas. For this particular one, the chart was a good way to establish my priorities and narrow down what I wanted to show. I didn’t include everything one must consider while choosing a phone but it was a personal Cognitive map, so I tried my best to depict my thought process versus having a choice map for someone to follow through.

Typography I: Linotype: The Film

Final Poster

This assignment highlights my ability to play off typefaces and colors together to create a poster that’s ascetically pleasing to the eye and easy to read and interpret. I created many different styles for this poster and finally settled on this one. I really enjoyed the process, it pushed me to do more when I thought I couldn’t think of anything else. It was one of my first times using Id so it was rather challenging but the final piece was worth it.

I learned the importance of hierarchy and how colors can effect the viewer’s mood/perception of your work. I tried to keep mine neutral enough so it wouldn’t be a burden to look at but also interesting enough to draw someone in to read it. I think this poster shows my growth as a designer since I learned how to use a new software and the many different ways you can design the same information but knowing how to choose the appropriate one.
