Materials Studies

This project invited me to explore the defining structure of individual letters and of whole words. Although creating a “typeface” by bending and twisting paint tubes seemed difficult, I found myself having a lot of fun playing with the variables of the actual tubes; such as the color of paint, volume of tubes, and size of tubes. I tried pushing the boundaries of legibility and found a middle ground between creativity and organization. A valuable lesson I learned from this project aside from type structure was that printers do not print as intensely and saturated as the image is depicted on a computer screen. This happy accident created a new dark perspective that ironically was not “vivid” at all. Instead of rejecting this accident I deeply appreciated it, so much in fact that I chose it as my final print.
