Emily Stivison’s Semester Reflection of GDES_1

Target hours: 150 hrs.

Current expert hours: 122hrs. from class

Expert experiences: East Austin Studio Tour, Arts and Rec. Studio Tour, Graphic Design Senior Presentations, helping VISU and Digital Projects make books.

Social/emotional development:

My social and emotion development for this class would be rated as mature. This is due to how I handle tough situations and my work in general. There is always room for improvement in my work but overall I think I did very well with my time constraints and work load this semester.

Sophistication of your work:

I think my work could be more sophisticated. There are certain aspects and parts I would change on some of my maps, like on my decision map. This one needed some help. It is not quite to the top yet. Some of my other maps could have been tweaked here and there but mostly my last map needs the most work.

Use of feedback:

I use the feedback from my peers and the teacher very well. Sometimes I don’t always think what they give me is the best advice, but I try it anyways, if it is a good idea, because it could always surprise me and be a good decision in the end. I would say this is meaningful and helps my work and learning experience in the end.

Level of challenge to yourself:

For this class, I believe I challenged myself greatly at some parts along the way. I had to scale it back some times because of all of the other work I was dealing with. I would rate myself in between an intense and a medium challenge of myself. I could improve and think why not try this idea when it might be a little uncomfortable to try, or try a new way of approaching a project so to see it from a different angle.

Contribution to climate:

During class critiques and discussions I feel like I contributed a lot of ideas and helpful knowledge to where I would rate myself as warm for contribution to climate. I tried to enhance the conversations with my ideas and knowledge and asked questions if I didn’t understand anything. I also wasn’t negative or rude to anyone during critique time if I gave feedback or otherwise in class. I thought I gave constructive criticism and different approaches to problems and projects.

Use of practice time:

Throughout the whole semester I would say that the use of my practice time was uneven. I would have moments were I would work on projects diligently and then I’d have other times were it would be a little sporadic. Overall I did spend a lot of time on projects in this class but could have spent it better.

I have definitely changed to be a more conscious and better designer just from taking this class this semester. There is always room for improvement and I feel like this class helped me continue on my quest for good design in life, in any shape or form. I think overall my grade in this class should be a solid B.
