My Type Book from Typography 1, Symbols from Graphic Design 1, and the Weather Report from Advanced Typography each shows how I have grown as a design over the past four semesters. My process is also important. It may take me many different iterations and sketches in the beginning, but I know I will reach a good project at the end.
My strengths are that I like to keep a design simple, but all the small details have a meaning and purpose. For instance, none of my designs are over the top, but all the details come together to make the piece stand out. The type book utilizes the same colors and concept subtly throughout the entirety. This helps bring all the spreads together. The symbols are very abstract, but that is where the strength lies. Although they were created with a certain purpose in mind, they could be used in other ways as well. For instance, the “fashion” symbol does not describe French fashion, but could be used as a fashion icon in general. My weather report was clean and simple while focusing on the movement of the characters.
My work can definitely improve in the risks that I take. While I like things to be simple, I also play it safe at times. In the majority of my projects I do what I know is correct. This means I need to expand my ideas and do things that I know are different and risky. That is definitely my biggest weakness. Once I can take bigger risks and stop worrying about being right I know my design will exceed greater heights.
