Going on the adventures in E Cesar Chavez helped me to better formulate a clear concept regarding the design of the book. I was inspired by a photo I took of an “OPEN” sign that was glowing orange with extremely vivid tones. I knew I wanted to use the photo somehow in the book and when I stopped to think about what I actually liked about the photo it was the rich orange color. This single photo spawned the book where I explored orange in Hispanic culture with a focus on the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood in Austin. Below you can see both the “OPEN” photo I mentioned and the ongoing note I had in my phone where I fleshed out the idea to its fruition.
After I decided the concept of my book I thought about the grid system. I knew I wanted the book to be image-based so the designs allowed for large images surrounded by a frame of white allowing the photo’s richness and subject matter to leap off of the page. Below are the grids I worked through:
After I selected the best grid for my design I proceeded to figure out the design scheme I wanted. I played with color and type choices until they conveyed what I envisioned best.
After choosing all of the design elements it was then time to place the content in and bind the book. I choose the bind my book as a hardcover copy which was difficult to learn but I felt like it was next level above a simple paper block.
