Symbol Methodology

Going into this first project in GDES1, I wasn’t completely sure about my skills on Illustrator, but I was willing to give it a shot. My main topic for this project came from my love of yoga and meditation. With a world that tries to make everything quicker and more timely, meditating is one of my favorite things to do. “Zen” had to be my topic choice.

However, brainstorming six words revolved around the world zen seemed difficult. I used words such as: “energy”, “buddha”, “lotus”, “balance”, “peace”, and “sun” to portray something that is such an abstract idea. However, as I got to sketching and creating stylized images, I quickly began to realize that despite my abstract idea, I loved my icons to look and mean something, much like how yoga and medication mean something to me. I figured that since the topic was abstract, the actual logo itself did not have to be completely so. My final images included the buddha and lotus, especially.

On the grading scale, I feel like I learnt a lot from this project, especially getting used to the program. I believe I did my A-effort work in this project, despite my lack of abstract symbols. Pathfinder was one of the most important tools needed massage the logo together and make it work cohesively. Its harmony seemed to work well, and the symbols as a whole seemed to go well together and as a collection. Because it was black and white, the silhouettes were very important in showing dimensions. However, this proved difficult in its scaleability. When downsized, the edges seemed to blur and become “blob-like”. If I were to do it again, I would make it even more basic and keep the lines very simple so that if it were downsized, the image’s vision wouldn’t be affected. I also feel like I would have added more negative space to improve its form downsized.

Gradewise, I believe my symbols were quite successful. Though I enjoyed looking at others work, I am very proud of my own and feel like they were stronger than most; especially, I loved how they looked on vinyl. I think my buddha symbol with the lotus hat may have potential of being a “real logo” because of its prominent message.

Critical Mass

Series of images that connected through similar design elements:

When given the flexibility to choose our final project, which had to focus on image sequence, I took my chance to create a stop motion. Before design, my biggest passion was photography, and I played around with different stop motions before:

Rather than having myself in the frame, I decided to use my cousin Abby as the main subject. This series was taken over the Easter holiday, and I decided to experiment with my shots and how they were taken. After using AfterEffects for the semester, where we were taught about making things such as joints move, I wanted to see if I could transfer those skills in photo. I had Abby “float” towards me, and “float” back in the initial and ending frames. This was unique that compared to my other stop motions I had done, which were quicker and more frames per second. Though I do enjoy having a quicker sequence, I’m glad I experimented with the timing and framing of the video. However, I think my development of the video could have been better displayed. It felt to me too “random” and without purpose.

The Constructivism project was to create multiple collages based off of the 5 different design elements: Rhythm, Unity, Contrast, Scales, and Balance. These different design elements had to be displayed in collage form. Heavily-based on Photoshop skills, I felt fairly confident in my ability to create these collages. The key to this project was the ability to use and manipulate layers; should the layer be lightened? screened? darkened? By manipulating the layers, the results would change dramatically. In the Balance example, I made the tree in a darkened layer, thus giving it a more gloomy feel. Creating collages sans magazines and scissors, was enjoyable because it gave one the ability to use many images online and allowed more creativity in that way. Though only the Rhythm image contained my photograph, I could see myself doing a project like this just for fun, without an actual assignment to it.

Scales: Dada

dada4dada3 Dada is an art movement of the European avant-garde stage in the early 20th century. It was based of Wassily Kandinsky’s theoretical writings and abstractions. It is the split between reality and convention, heavily using collages in its development. In this dada-based assignment, we were to construct multiple collages based from the era. The aim of this project was difficult, especially since many of these collages were more randomly placed and focused more on being experimental. Using the tools learnt in class, I played around with layers heavily to create these four different works. Though Dadaists used different techniques such as found- and created- surfaces, incorporating that those in Photoshop meant using layers to create that depiction.

Before beginning our experience in AfterEffects, one of our first assignments in Image Meth was to create a letter form out of both cardboard and styrofoam. After taking AP Studio Art 3D in high school, I loved to use my hands again to create, something you can’t do completely on the computer. Some of my past work include:

At the end, we used AfterEffects to make a gif of the two letter forms. This project was one of my favorites in the class, because we had the ability to use our handskills, something you rarely see when your final project is almost always a printed poster. Real creativity had to be used to create a structure that could stand on its own, and I was faced with that challenge with my cardboard form. My cardboard form, which was made out of many triangles, had to use many, many layers of hot glue to keep the structure strong enough to stand on its own. Though I did not have the ability to adapt it further, I am content with the end results of the two forms.

Using the elements of design, the objective of the project was to display prominent features of the elements of design through photography. Although all these photos seem somewhat different, they all went together on a single roll paper as a series, displaying shape, line, space, texture, and form. As a photographer myself, it was strange to be going back to such basic design principles and photographing them in their everyday life. We seem to walk our lives without truly appreciating what is in front of us, until we start looking for them. After walking to the Village/Hunt/Le Mans area so many times, I’ve stopped taking in the beautiful architecture that the building has. By doing this assignment, I was able to keep my eyes open for the idea of design everywhere; from the grass’ texture, to the perspective of my thumb compared to the Austin skyline. The world is beautiful, and full of design.

Type Specimen Book

The type specimen book was our final project for Typography I, challenging us to apply the skills that we had learnt over the course of the semester. Paired up with a partner, we were to split up the work to create a digital design, as well as a physical design.

I believe our choice of font worked fondly with the speech by David Foster Wallace. “This is Water” is one of my favorite speeches, and I had heard it long before the semester had started. It talked about how life shouldn’t be still with our everyday routine, but we had to step out of our comfort zone and realize we are more aware of our surroundings than we realize.

The biggest challenges in the project was to keep constant margins that will work with the size and spacing of the font. Initially, we chose a more contemporary interpretation, by doing hierarchy to design which fonts to make larger or bold. However, it did not look as clean. Therefore, in our final draft we did have key quotes that we separated from the flow of the speech. This is does as well with the digital copy of the speech.

In both the digital and physical copy, it was interesting to see the limits to design; how far could you take a design without making it chaotic? I believe that the book was a simply, but beautiful piece.

Typographic Poster

Type Poster

Using a quote assigned to us, our assignment was to use a fellow classmates’ font and create a triptych showcasing: 1) The quote, 2) The display of type, and 3) one character from the typeface. My quote was: Sometimes you discover the picture you thought you had, that everybody thought we had, actually turns out to be wrong. This really hit home to me, because I had come to learn that life didn’t happen the way that I had initially planned. I did not picture myself away from home, and I was for the first time in my life completely lonely and fearful. It was filled with imperfections, which is what I showed in the middle piece with many holes in the shape.

Randomly-placed holes filled the poster, and I chose to make the poster lean more heavily on one side of the poster, showing the state of imperfection I was in. In the 26 lines, an individual character was highlighted in the sea of black, showcasing the typeface. The bottom logo linked the first and third posters together, making the three work cohesively.

Typeface Design

This was the first project done in Typography class, and the first assignment in the Graphic Design program. We were given a quote, and with that quote, use the website Fontstruct.com to create a font based off of the inspiration from that quote. Pinterest was used as research for this assignment to gain inspiration for the quote. With that research, I decided to make my font based of the imperfections of the mind, especially when it freezes. Like when you get a brain freeze eating a cold desert, the brain shuts down momentarily, cutting off any thoughts you may have been having at that point. This was my interpretation of “a shiver of the workshop of the brain”. The mood was imperfect, and sort of scattered and broken for this reason. Though the website Fontstruct was very basic to use, I wish there was more options on the website to create beyond pixels.
