Sophomore Portfolio Review

During these past semesters, I feel like I have continued to grow as a designer. At the beginning, I feel like I normally stuck to what I felt was the safe choice in terms of designing or what looked like the obvious way to design something. However, I gradually learned to explore more options as I learned the importance of brainstorming, multiple iterations and experimenting in design.

I think one of my strongest works is the Design Culture Now poster for typography I. After many drafts, I came to like the way the design was turning out even if it was not what I had intended at first. Despite the fact that gradients are not usually recommended, I think they went well with this particular design and color pallet. I also think the layout was very clean because of the justified text in the columns.  In addition, the black and white made a nice contrast with the bright colors of the title and the speaker’s names which made for a visually strong poster.
Another of the works that I consider one of my strongest is the Critical Mass project. I had always wanted to try some animation but I was not aware of the amount of work it took. Even so, I found this project to be very entertaining and satisfying in the end. Time management and organization was an important factor for this project. Making sure I was keeping up with the schedule and keeping all the files organized was a little hard but it paid off in the end when I had the final result.  Even though there are various things that I would like to change as I look at it now, this is one of my strongest works because of the overall design of the footage, the story, the craft and the audio.

Although it is a motion piece as well, the Weather Report is another of my strongest works.  I really enjoyed thinking about ways to animate the words and graphics to show different Latch structures. I learned about how you can direct the viewer by the object’s motion and sub motion.  There are some aspects that I would change such as the ending of the video and adding more sub motion in some parts but overall, I feel like the final product was good. I think the pace was concise throughout the video and, after many iterations, the graphics were to my liking as well. In the end, I find animation to be complicated and very time consuming but nonetheless fun to experiment with.
