This assignment was to take a fellow classmate’s typeface and create a typographic poster influenced by the style of the typeface.
I was given the typeface created by one of my classmates using FontStruct, and I designed three posters: one with all of the letters, one with just one letter, and one with a quote that coincides with the design style. I created all of these posters in InDesign, and retrieved the typeface off the file server.
Because the style of the text is very whimsical and would fit in the context of fairytales, I chose to make the background pink and alternate the color of text between white and a darker shade of pink. I did not want to add any dark colors or bold designs for fear of overpowering the sweet and airy mood employed by the text. First I created the poster with just one letter, then I created the poster with all letters, and I saved the quote for the end because I knew that would be the most challenging. I then went back and made several edits to each poster to ensure they were all cohesive as group yet strong enough to stand alone.
I remember spending a good amount of time on this project, specifically the poster with the quote. When creating the poster with one letter, I found it somewhat boring and too simple with just one letter on the page. I experimented adding multiple letters and various strokes of line between them to make the poster more exciting, but found that the extra lines were too much and took away from the design of the type. For the poster with all letters, I decided to have some letters be larger and overlay the list of letters underneath. I picked the most ornamental letters to be larger and darker, but had some difficult determining where they should be placed. The last poster I created, the quote poster, was incredibly difficult to design in a way that I thought was visually appealing. I decided to somewhat of a mirror effect and have the type mimic the mirroring of the quote.
As I mentioned above, the typeface itself is very girly, very whimsical, and not incredibly bold. I wanted to create a design that was fun, soft, and simple to coincide with the text. The pink background and simplicity in the design techniques embody this theme.
The color, hierarchy of letters, and stroke width enhance the soft nature of the content and make the letters seem as though they fit in the context the design employs.
