VISUI1311 Project #2: Alex Pesina

Collage 1 – “Earth” Alex Pesina

I hand made this collage. It is made from multiple photos of grass and concrete. I also decided to incorporate real grass because I wanted to give the whole work an organic feel.

Collage 2 – “Pink” Alex Pesina

This is another hand made collage. I cut out the patch of grass from the original photo and then filled in the space with cut outs from two other photos. To draw the eye to the pink flowers I added the pink paper to make the collage atmosphere more whole.

Collage 3 – “Blue” Alex Pesina

I created this collage through Photoshop. I added in the tree with the pink flowers and the blue rocks to the original image. The circles are then cut outs of the blue and pink together.

Collage 4 – “Green” Alex Pesina

This is another Photoshop image. I layered the same image over and over in different directions to create a disrupted image.

Collage 5 – “Girl-E” Alex Pesina

This is another hand made collage. I enjoyed putting together a very nice image of pink flowers with the grimy look of half smoked cigarettes.

Harmony:

I used black and white images to focus more on shape rather than color. Cutting up and pasting images together was my main influence on my collages. The difficult part for me was to figure out what idea to go with. There’s so much to do with this project but I went with a more graphic design path but using shapes and precision in my images. The last two images were fun. I wanted to see if I could blend two images together to make it look like one. Untitled-2 Untitled-2 Untitled-1 Oct. 16-17-2015 279Oct. 16-17-2015 283 2015-16-10

From the beginning of this project I was infatuated with the idea of a building block, and this idea relates back to my theme in the Gestalt project. Nature has it’s very complex and unique set of building blocks that differ from man’s constructs. Even though man is a product of nature, his constructions are not as intricate or complex as nature. I demonstrated this idea by using fractals to form natural constructs. I scanned rocks and plants I found on S Congress, put them into a pattern, and produced a figure that resembles something in nature– collage 1 being a tree (scanned plants) and collage 2 being a mountain (scanned rocks).

Harmony: Layering and Building Meaning

My digital collage experience was a lot more challenging than the actual paper cut and paste collage. My first thought on cut and paste collages was geometric shapes, which I incorporated to most collages when I could, it challenged and limited myself on how they could all be pieced together including how colors went well with one another. The digital collages were a lot harder, I don’t have a lot of practice on photoshop so the process took me a lot longer per picture. If I was given more time I think I could do a bit more with the digital collages.

My experience on this project was good, I liked the idea of limiting one place for pictures. S.Congress is a very busy place and things are constantly changing. I went out a couple of times to capture things that I’ve never seen before and found that there is a lot to see. I enjoyed this project, it gave us limits, but at the same time we were free to capture what we wanted.

Project #2: AlyGorday

Austin in Color- In this Collage, I took a picture of the city from South Congress then in photoshop, I changed all the colors. Once I did that, I added an effect which is why the squares are there.

From the other side- In this collage, I used the explosion effect it photoshop. I also removed the window and placed a picture of the city in it. I love the contrast of the green and the colors of the city.

VISU1311 Project #2 Collage, Shelby Charette

Collage 1, “Lucidity” Shelby Charette

Below is a photograph I took of a woman in a store. I caught her in mid-thought and used photoshop to include several other parts of images to create a sort of daydream-like state.

Lucidity

Collage 2, “Portrait, Milla” Shelby Charette

The photo is a portrait of one of my friends. I used scans of a page of a book, and things I found on South Congress, along with a photo of foliage and some colorful stones in order to create this image. The paper in the background makes the image seem as if it is textured, yet it is printed on normal matte paper.

Portrait, Milla.

Collage 3, Austin Guitar Man, Shelby Charette

Before hand, the photo was very colorless, and despite being a very visually appealing photo, it lacked character. I used different colored layers in photoshop in order to subtract and add shapes to the photo.

Austin Street Performer

Collage 4, Outside Looking Outside, Shelby Charette

I crafted this piece by hand, and used a photo of a window surrounded by foliage and cut the windows out, then I layered another photograph behind it. Also I added some black and white foliage photographs to the corners.

Collage 5, Different Perspective Shelby Charette

I took one photo I shot from congress that was not particularly interesting, and cut and combined the shapes in order to make the photo more exciting to look at. I made this one by hand, and scanned it, although the texture is better understood in person.

Collage 6, Associate.

I did this collage a lot like the one above, although instead of gluing the shapes down, I scanned them in the way I thought they looked best, and took that scan and printed it on 17″ by 22″ Matte paper and cut the shape out so there was no white as a background.

Project #2: Alex Clarke

Since my Gestalt project focused around South Congress after the rain, my final two collages focused more on the theme of water, as well as the play on continuity and negative space creation. I “took” all of the images with their formal qualities in mind, as well as the perceptual qualities of water in the final two images. I liked interchanging between solid shapes and abstraction, a lot like you would see in ripples in water.

VISU-1100-01 Blog Post #8

Fr. Nguyen, a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, was born in the country, Vietnam, and moved to the United States in the very late 1970s. In 1995, he was admitted into the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Norte Dame. His current piece “Drawing/Painting TIME ” captures the portraits of a plethora of people, dismissing any specific demographic.

My first impression of the work is that each portrait seems carefully detailed and painted in a way that seems very warm and amiable. The artwork seems like a documentation of human life.

My eyes are drawn to how the portraits were placed together. They were very organized and charted very well. Vertical and Horizontal lines. They are sized consistently throughout the piece.

The artist seems to be trying to relate people to each other. Documenting that each person, no matter the circumstances, is subject to change, growth, and decay, but also each person experiences this phenomenon differently.

I feel that this representation of human life feels a bit too mundane for my taste, but yet again I am a design major, which may contribute to my taste. The uniformity throws me off.
