Mental health can affect everyone, no matter your age or status. Hearing Celebrities share their stories helps break the stigma around mental health. It’s not something to be ashamed about, anyone can struggle, even your favorite celebs and it looks different for everyone. Below are some celebrities who have bravely shared their mental health story, and we urge everyone to continue normalizing the conversation surrounding mental health.

Miley Cyrus

In an interview with Elle, Miley talked about her struggles with depression, and how many people don’t really know how to talk about their depression including her. It is beyond important that Miley mentioned that people see her depression as her being ungrateful, but that’s far from the truth, as she explains, it’s something she can’t help, and she’s spot on. Many times people who don’t experience depression don’t understand that it’s not something you can control, even when others think you are supposed to be the happiest person with no problems because you are a celebrity. Miley also talks about how it’s beyond important to have a support system and someone to talk to, and that depression medication is not something to be ashamed about (of course with a doctor’s prescription).

Demi Lovato

Demi has always been an advocate for mental health, as she has suffered from mental health herself. Demi has even advocated for mental health reform at Capital Hill by wanting to destigmatize the conversation and help others get access to healthcare, this is amazing! Demi spoke about how people don’t recognize mental health as an actual physical illness, and often think it’s something “taboo” to talk about. During the pandemic, demi even opened a mental health fund to help provide counseling for people during the pandemic. Demi has been extremely vocal about how asking for help is not a weakness, despite what the stereotypes are, it’s a strength.

Selena Gomez

Texas native Selena has also faced struggles with mental health. Selena told Vogue that her tour was a tough time mentally for her, as her mental health was in a bad place. Selena was having constant panic attacks, feeling overwhelmed by her anxiety, and decided to get help. Selena talks about how therapy was amazing for her and is now co-founder of Wondermind, a company advocating for mental health fitness. Wondermind strives to help people with their mental health fitness by having the right tools, honest conversations, and changing the stereotypes around mental health and advice for experts. This is a fabulous resource and a great step towards helping others get the help they need. Check out https://www.wondermind.com/ for more information.

Anyone can suffer from Mental Health

Struggling with mental health isn’t something to be ashamed about, anyone can suffer from it. It’s important that celebrities continue speaking up about mental health so that we can continue the conversation and take mental health seriously, as we all should.
